Cedillo Seeks City Council Approval for Office Space in Former Masonic Building

The councilman wants to open an office in a historic building whose owner recently violated preservation laws.

The Los Angeles City Council will consider a proposal Tuesday by Councilmember Gil Cedillo to pay more than $4,000 monthly for office space in the historic Highland Park Masonic Building that served as Cedillo's campaign headquarters and was in the spotlight recently for violating L.A.'s architectural preservation laws.

According to Eastsider L.A., Cedillo plans to open his office in the 90-year-old building's first floor, on the corner of 5577 N. Figueroa St. and Avenue 56.

In early July, the owner of the three-story, 19,000-square-foot building was ordered by the Department of Building of Safety to stop work on replacing a set of historic windowpanes with fixed-glass panes in violation of the law. By then, however, eight windows had already been replaced, the owner, Hector Cruz, told Highland Park-Mount Washington Patch at the time.
