Then and Now: The Masonic Temple

The distinctive columns at the Highlands building recalls an earlier time in Highland Park.

The Highland Park Masonic Temple at the southwest corner of North Figueroa and Avenue 56 may be gone, but the building's distinctive arches remain.

Built in 1923, the Highland Park Masonic Temple is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Fittingly, the building is used to continue on many of the traditions of Highland Park's days as a quaint suburb, serving as both a function hall and venue for ballroom dancing classes.

The temple is not immue to the changes brought on by time, though. First Defense Mind Body Studio, which offers and array of fitness courses, is located below the ballroom and banquet hall.

At night, when traffic in minimal, the view from acoss Avenue 56 is much the same now as it was in 1923.
