Panther Boys Hold Off Gabrielino, Girls Lose to Hart

Franklin's boys team has had its last three games decided by six points; The girls team drops its first decision since its season opening loss against San Gabriel High School.

varsity boys basketball team picked up a close win Tuesday night, topping Gabrielino High School, 50-48, in the squads second game of the La Salle/Temple City Holiday Classic.

The Panthers (6-4, 2-0 Northern League) outscored the Eagles 30-19 in the first half, but allowed Gabrielino to get back in the game in the third quarter. The Eagles (2-6) put up nine more points than Franklin in the third, outscoring the Panthers 29-20 after the break.

FHS had three players who scored in double figures. Leading the way for Franklin was Zachary Hinton with 19 points on an 8-for-16 shooting effort from the floor. Hinton was also a major factor on the boards, yanking down 24 rebounds on the night. Senior Israel Suarez contributed 13 points and Gilbert Machado scored 12.

Franklin’s last three games have been decided by six points. The team continues action in tournament play today.

The Panthers girls team opened up La Canada New Year's Ball tournament with a 59-38 loss against Hart High School.

“We didn’t have a good first half and one of our starters got injured,” Head coach Cressida Mia Guanlao said.

FHS (2-2, 2-0 Northern League) outscored Hart (3-8) in the second half, 24-16, and also stepped up on defense, holding the Indians to just two points in the third quarter.

Franklin senior Rena Tomihara suffered an ankle injury and will most likely miss the rest of the tournament. According to Mia Guanlao, Tomihara is a key player for the Panthers and is scheduled to have her injury examined by a physician today.

The Panthers had a hard time stopping Victoria Lionetti, who poured in 21 points for HHS including three, 3-pointers.

“Hart was highly skilled,” Mia Guanlao said. “I think that was a good match for us, as I think they are better than anyone in conference.”

FHS is currently tied with Eagle Rock High School for first place in the Northern League standings. The team tips off at 5:30 p.m. tonight against host La Cañada High School.
