Burbank, Franklin Students Get Free Turkeys For Thanksgiving

The birds are given to 70 Highland Park students from low-income families.

The Highland Park Chamber of Commerce, in association with the offices of Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez, Senator Kevin  Leόn, Assembly Speaker John Perez, Councilmember José Huizar and Councilmember Gil Cedillo distributed 70 turkeys for Thanksgiving to students from low-income families in Burbank Middle School and Franklin High School Friday.

The turkey give-away began at 3 p.m. at Burbank Middle School, where 40 birds as well as sides such as mashed potatoes and stuffing were distributed. The drive resumed at 3:30 p.m. at Franklin High, where 30 turkeys and sides were given. Assembly Speaker Perez is an alumni of both the schools.

Teri Bonsell, at-large director of the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council, went to both schools to supply the turkeys. She said she and her husband Paul, who is also an at-large director at HHPNC, have been organizing the turkey drive for the past seven years.
