Aldama Elementary Parents on Fundraising Drive to Upgrade School’s Computer Lab

The goal is to revamp the lab's computer, plus raise $20,000 by August for a full-time computer instructor.

Every year since 2010, Aldama Elementary School’s PTA has raised an average of $30,000 for a well-regarded Playworks program devoted to promoting organized games, physical activity and fair play among students during recess and lunch, while also helping reduce schoolyard bullying and other harmful behaviors and facilitating classroom learning.

So imagine what a challenge it is for a group of Aldama parents to try to revamp the school’s ageing computer lab (30 students share four CPU towers in it) as well as raise $20,000 by August for a full-time computer instructor.

“When the computers aren't crashing, teaching even the basics is overwhelming,” said Aldama parent Rebecca LaFond. “We have found a program called ComputerWise Kids that will give us a full-time teacher with a curriculum that covers everything from the basics to beginning programming. Our kids absolutely will need these skills to be employable in 20 years.”

To raise the necessary funds, the Aldama parents are hosting a party and silent auction at the K York Studio, located on 5028 1/2 York Blvd., on June 1, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $35 per head and include food as well as refreshments. Visit www.bitesforbytes.com to purchase tickets.  Childcare is available at The Awesome Playground on 5158 York Blvd. Call (323) 256-2467 for reservations.
