Petition Launched to Save Highland Park Monument

The Highland Park Heritage Trust wants Gil Cedillo to help preserve the former Shoppers Market.

The Highland Park Heritage Trust has launched a petition drive to save the former Shoppers Market, a 53-year-old Googie-style building that was awarded Historic-Cultural Monument Status by the Cultural Heritage Commission on Aug. 1.

Located on Avenue 45 and Figueroa Street, the monument currently houses Superior Grocers. Designed by famed architect Ronald Cleveland, the landmark is noted for its “space-age” Googie style of architecture that originated in 1949.

But because the building's cultural heritage status cannot be finalized unless it is approved by the Los Angeles City Council, the HPHT is gathering signatures to urge Councilmember Gil Cedillo to help save the former Shoppers Market.
