Is This Photo Sending Mixed Messages?

To an extent, yes, but it also underscores the differences between CD 1 election rivals Gil Cedillo and José Gardea over the issue of billboards.

Among the issues on which former Assemblyman Gil Cedillo and Council District 1 Chief of Staff José Gardea don't see eye to eye is the growing presence of billboards across much of Los Angeles. Cedillo supports billboards; Gardea does not.

This photo, taken at the intersection of Avenue 36 and Eagle Rock Boulevard in Glassell Park, neatly captures the divide over billboards between the two CD 1 candidates.

While Cedillo's image is on stark display above the name of the company—Lamar—he openly supports, a sign supporting Gardea stands diminutively by. Meanwhile, the owner of the property where the Lamar billboard is located appears to support Gardea, thereby effectively undercutting Cedillo's message, while at the same time somewhat undermining the Lamar brand.
