City Council Candidates to Participate in Bilingual Debates

Cedillo and Gardea will debate in both English and Spanish on April 27.

The Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council in partnership with the Highland Park Heritage Trust, Montecito Heights Improvement Association and the Mount Washington Association will host a pair of debates between the candidates vying to represent Council District 1 in both Spanish and English.

The debates between former Assemblyman Gil Cedillo and José Gardea will be held on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Highland Park Recreation Center, 6150 Piedmont Ave.

The first debate will be held in English and will run from 10-11 a.m. The Spanish-language debate will be help from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

HHPNC President Monica Alcaraz stated in a press release that "[t]he forum will focus on the issues impacting CD1 with the focus on NELA residents and businesses."

According to the certified election results released last month, Cedillo earned 8,390 votes to Gardea's 7,392, a 49-percent to 43-percent edge. Trailing in distant third-place was Highland Park businessman Jesse Rosas, 1,288 votes, or 7-percent.
