For the 13th time this season, fireplace use has been prohibited in the Los Angeles Air Basin because of anticipated bad smog.

The ban takes effect at midnight tonight, and will last 24 hours, said Sam Atwood at the South Coast AQMD. Tiny particles are expected to exceed health standards, he said.

The ban applies to most residences in all of Orange County, all of Los Angeles County except the Antelope Valley, and western Riverside and San
Bernardino counties.

Exempted from the order are fireplaces that sit more than 3,000 feet above sea level, low income homes, residences without natural gas service and homes that have no heating source other than fire.

The National Weather Service called for typically mild nights, with lows expected to be around 48 in most of the area.
