Battalion-wide CERT Community Meeting in Northeast LA - Public encouraged to attend.

CERT Community Mtg:

"Local Hazards Assessment, Emergency Response Training, and Developing a Community Emergency Plan:
Why & How to Get Involved in CERT"

Title: CERT Community Mtg (encompasses Battalions 1,2 & 11)

When:  Sun, April 27th, 2-3:30pm

Where:  Eagle Rock City Hall Bldg, 2035 Colorado Blvd, LA 90041

Audience:   Open to the public (anyone interested in disaster survival and/or community emergency response activities)

Cost:  Free

This public meeting hosted by LAFD CERT Battalion 2* (Northeast LA) is open to all LA residents who are interested  in disaster survival and/or learning how to be prepared for the next major emergency.  A major goal of CERT community meetings is  to spark interest in the program and to encourage more people to attend LAFD's free CERT training program. Another goal is to nurture the startup of a local Eagle Rock CERT group.

During this meeting, we will look at specific local Northeast hazards, including the York Blvd fault, liquefaction & landslide zones, and a high-pressure underground natural gas pipeline.

For example, did you know that in Highland Park, a large high-pressure gas pipeline similar to the one that exploded in  San Brunos crosses the Raymond Fault at Lincoln and Ave 49?  In fact, the pipeline traverses down Lincoln and passess  schools.    Because of that, I would recommend that Highland Park CERT include these locations in a danger zone, high-risk and in their CEP include a recommendation to temporarily evacuate that pipeline area (at least 2 blocks) after a big earthquake.

Local risk assessment and hazard analyses forms the foundation of a community emergency plan and results a  prioritized list of  issues to address (ie. areas that we anticipate will have more damage and injuries. Pre-defining safe zones such as emergency villages as well as defining areas of potential  danger are really the first two steps in the development of a community emergency plan.

The generation of a local community emergency plan for every neighborhood in Battalion 2* is one of our goals for the next 2-3 years.  This year we will start with the communities of Monterey Hills, Hermon, and an NC32 community.  Each neighborhood will customize their own plan from an easy-to-use, award-winning  template which will be available at the meeting.

We will also discuss upcoming 2014 Northeast LA CERT activities, including a fun Search & Rescue Challenge drill in July, a free CERT class in Eagle Rock in Sep, and a tri-community Shakeout Drill for all residents in October 2014.
