Can You Build a Better Bikeway for North Figueroa? (Submit Drawings)

Patch invites you to put your creativity and design skills to the test.

A small group of local cycling enthusiasts and community activists gathered at Highland Park's on Friday evening for a meeting of shop owner Josef Bray-Ali's initiative.

During the informal meeting, participants discussed a range of ideas: bike tours of business, creating a map of cycle friendly establishments and conducting a survey of cyclist and pedestrian traffic.

Bray-Ali explained that the purpose of establishing Figueroa For All was to give interested locals an opportunity to have meaningful input into the implementation of the Los Angeles Master Bike Plan, which was.

Among the projects called for in the plan is the creation of "a loop" of bike lanes that would connected the N. Figueroa Street, York Boulevard, Eagle Rock Boulevard and Colorado Boulevard.

Bray-Ali said he hoped the establishment of those new bike lanes would provide an opportunity to holistically rethink transportation options on the four main thoroughfares.

On Friday evening, Bray-Ali shared a "conceptual bike lanes cross-sections" drawing, provided by the Department of Transportation for N. Figueroa Street.

The drawing shows the current street configuration, as well as two possible alternatives.

In the spirit of Figueroa For All, we though it would be a fun exercise to give the readers of Patch a chance to design their own street configurations.

In the box on the right, you can download a blank street template, as well as thumbnail pictures of bikes, cars, trucks and pedestrians.

You'll have to work within the framework of a 70-foot long road, but other than that we only ask that you use the exercise to design a street configuration that you think would be safest for bikers, pedestrians and motorists.

If you're using a P.C., Microsoft paint will be sufficient to put your drawings together. For Mac users, Paintbrush will serve just fine.

Submit your photos to Patch, either through upload function available in the media section of this story, or in an e-mail to me at david.fonseca@patch.com. I'll post them all in a separate story, and create a poll to determine which one is the best.
