6 Hours a Week Isn’t Good Enough For Visiting Southwest Museum, Protesters Say

Friends of the Southwest Museum Coalition launch a protest against the Autry's decision to open the Mt. Washington landmark for just a day a week.

Imagine if a museum in your proverbial backyard were open for just six hours a week even though it houses one of the largest and finest collection of native American artifacts.

A public protest against those measly hours occurred Tuesday as Friends of the Southwest Museum Coalition gathered outside the venerable Southwest Museum to oppose its once-a-week schedule after seven years of being entirely closed, reports Eastsider L.A.

The protest was also aimed at reminding the Southwest Museum’s owners, the Autry Museum, that it has “stiffed taxpayers” by repairing the Mount Washington landmark at a cost of more than $10 million in public funds, while offering them “very little in return for their generous investment,” according to a coalition statement quoted by the Eastsider.
