Alliance of River Communities, Pink Walk, Pretrial Hearing

Ease into the weekend with these events, some serious, some fun and some a bit of both.

1. Neighborhood Council Alliance of River Communities

The Neighborhood Council Alliance of River Communities, which represents 14 regional neighborhood councils actively concerned about the betterment of the Los Angeles River and the Arroyo Seco, is scheduled to conduct its monthly meeting starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Glassell Park Community and Senior Center, located at 3750 N. Verdugo Rd, 90065. Among the issues on the agenda for discussion and possible action are a letter of support to the Los Angeles City Council for the "Alternative 20" Los Angeles River ARBOR study—an acronym for "Alternative with Restoration Benefits and Opportunities for Revitalization." Urban bee keeping and support for the ban on single-use plastic bags are other items on the agenda.

2. Pink Walk

A walk aimed at spreading awareness about breast cancer—still the Number One cause of death among young woman—and empowering women while celebrating humanity will take place today, Thursday, Oct. 24 on the football field of Franklin High School from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. This will be the 6th Annual Pink Walk organized by the school’s Dream Project Club. The public is welcome to witness the event.

3. Felix Gomez pretrial hearing

A pretrial hearing in court is scheduled today, Thursday, Oct. 24, for Felix Gomez, Jr., 22, an alleged Highland Park gang member charged with the shooting deaths of two teenage boys in Highland Park in 2009. The hearing will take place in Dept. 120 of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center located at 210 W. Temple St. Contact: (213) 974-5755.

4. Aldama Elementary Harvest Festival

Mark your calendars: Aldama Elementary School is scheduled to host its 2nd Annual Harvest Festival from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. The community is invited to join students, parents and school staff for a variety of games (costing just 50 cents each—or $13 for an Ultimate Play Pass) and arts and crafts. A haunted house and delicious treats are other attractions. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of school supplies. Aldama is located at 632 N. Ave. 50.
