Join us for Voices from the Hill, a performance lifting up the stories and sounds of an unprotected greenspace in East Los Angeles called Elephant Hill. The event leads visitors through wild and distressed sections of the hillside, and culminates in a regenerated area, highlighting a vision for the future in which a protected Elephant Hill becomes a welcoming place for humans, birds and other wildlife to coexist.
Following a meandering path across the hillside, visitors will be invited to consider their connections to place, nature, and each other. Six stopping points will showcase song, percussion, and visual art, tying together the narrative themes of the performance: Heed the Call, Struggle, Devastation, Crossroads, Contemplation, and Regeneration. Performers stationed along the path will share music written by Guillermo Brown, with libretto written by LA Poet Laureate Luis Rodriguez. Interactive installations by Raul Baltazar and Maria Maea which incorporate natural materials from the hill will serve as resting points along the way. Cresting the hill, a percussion ensemble will use instruments created from detritus collected from the site and surroundings to beckon visitors to the final regenerated space.
The event celebrates the importance of collaboration, whether between humans and nature or among ourselves, in safeguarding a healthy world for all.
Note: This event has uneven walking paths and, at times, steep climbs that may be difficult for some participants. Our May 18th event is designed for those with mobility limitations, and we hope you will be able to join us then.&nbsp;

“I have been creating collages for the past 30 years. After spending most of my career in the entertainment industry and working with digital platforms, I have decided to switch to analog work. I grew up in England during the 1960s and as a boy, I collected stamps. Nowadays, I often include them in my work. I am fascinated by layered images and the creative accidents and surprises they bring about. Sometimes I have a specific story in mind, while other times I leave it up to the viewer’s imagination to create their own story.”. – James Faulkner

Arroyo Arts Collective Presents What Do You See, What Do You Hear?
An innovative live performing arts event of free dance and music performances and workshops, hosted on the beautiful grounds of The Audubon Center at Debs Park.

For each date, four sets of musicians and dancers rotate with one another so that no two performances are identical. The improvised creation between Dancer and Musician is designed to open lines of communication and connection – musicians interpret their dance partner, while dancers respond and contribute to the music so that each elevates the other’s art.
Following the presentations, we will offer alternating free music and dance workshops for the public.
 
• Let’s Make Music: Have fun creating music with innovative new non-traditional ways. No musical experience needed. 
• Movement in Your Environment: In this dance and movement workshop, use your environment to give you inspiration and help find your groove.
