Arrest Near in Highland Park Cyclist Assault

Photo lineup is scheduled for Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Police Department is close to making an arrest in connection to the alleged vehicular assault of a cyclist in Highland Park late last month, police said.

"I believe I have identified the driver," Central Traffic Division Detective Felix Padilla told Highland Park-Mount Washington Patch. "He matches the description given to me by the victim.

As on Patch, Highland Park resident Winona Wacker alleged that she was intentionally run down by an older Caucasian male in a white convertible Volvo C70 near the intersection of Avenue 50 and Buchanan Street.

Wacker said she was cycling in front of the motorist for less than a block before he became irate and threatened to run her over for not clearing out of the roadway.  The driver followed through with his threat when Wacker continued to ride her bicycle in the road, she alleged.

She said she was "optimistic" that she would be able to identify the suspect out of a photo lineup, but also pointed out that the circumstances of the incident didn't allow her to get a good long look at him.

Padilla said that despite his heavy caseload, which comprises three homicides and about 40 minor crimes, Wacker's case has been moved up the priority list due to the nature of the attack.

"He could hurt somebody else," Padilla said. "This is a pretty disturbing case. He should have known better."
