Marmion Way Cleanup Day Scheduled

A cleanup event has been scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10. Will you be there?

Proving the old adage about oil and squeaky wheels, Field Deputy Kai Newkirk said Councilman José Huizar's office will be hosting a cleanup event on Marmion Way on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. until noon.

ASNC member Ann Walnum on Monday evening raised her concern about the "appalling" amount of litter that has long be discarded along the scenic roadside in Mount Washington and called for a cleanup.

After receiving a personal call from Walnum on Tuesday morning, Newkirk quickly got to work setting a date for a cleanup.

Newkirk said the cleanup would be sponsored in conjunction with councilman Ed Reyes' office, which represents the south side of the road.

"It's actually something we've been doing every year," Newkirk said.

Community volunteers who sign up for the cleanup event won't be working alone: Newkirk said he's hoping to enlist the Clean and Green team of Los Angeles Conservation Corps. to take part in the effort.

Before and after the cleanup, Huizar Field Deputy Zenay Loera said locals have several outlets to ensure that large items are removed from the roadside.

For starters, residents can call the Los Angeles city services line at 311 to report bulky items left on the road side.

Council District 14 also holds bulky item drop off events on a monthly basis. The next drop off day is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 27. Residents can drop off items either at the public parking lot at the intersection of Ave. 51 and York Boulevard or at Huizar's Northeast field office at 2035 Colorado Boulevard.

"We do try to do whatever we can to hear the community's concerns, especially with bulky items. We encourage people to call our office or to call 311," Loera said. "We work very will with sanitation to pick these items up."

Ok - here are my thoughts about a community-member involved clean-up on Marmion. I have done this before - it is totally not safe. People leave diapers, dead fish (yep), needles, and other unsanitary items that no one should be exposed to w/o the proper protection. It makes no sense for a community who can pay for it - yep most Mount Washington folks could contribute some money - to expect that our demands on the City budget should be at the top of the list. I think in this day of limited funds, we should expect to help financially ( hey, how about ASNC funds) but not by picking up disgusting things and dangerous objects. Young children and people with compromised health conditions should not be involved in this clean-up

I agree that young children should not be involved in the cleanup. Wearing gloves, boots and long sleeved shirts and jeans should be protection enough for those of us who wish to join in keeping our areas clean. As far as contributing money to hire cleaners to do the job, good idea perhaps this idea can be instituted via City Council. Send them a check!!
