Residents Celebrate Preservation Success in Garvanza

Neighbors celebrate planned restoration of locally famous Dr. Smith House

Garvanza residents have long celebrated the storied history of the Dr. Smith house, located near the Rite Aid at Avenue 63 and Garvanza Avenue. Now, following years of advocacy, those residents are now celebrating what they hope will be a bright future for the building. Highland Park Heritage Trust Member Nicole Possert reports the following, for The EastsiderLA: One of the earliest and most significant properties in the Garvanza section of Highland Park  has been rescued and taken off the long-term “watch list” because of a new preservation-minded owner [Brad Chambers]. Manning's Sign To Be Relighted Today

The Manning's relighting ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Another historic sign is set to shine over Highland Park. From Highland Park Lights: You are invited to the relighting of the Manning’s historic rooftop sign Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012 • 4:30 pm @ Highland Park Farmers Market from Figueroa to Marmion, between Ave. 57 & Ave. 58 (Gold Line station adjacent) Come early to shop and eat (the market opens at 3 pm). We’ll have coffee and snacks. Come witness the successful renovation of the Manning’s Coffee Store neon & opal glass sign. It joins the Highland Theatre in creating a North Figueroa/Historic Route 66 Signage District. Renovation of Manning's Coffee Store Sign in Motion

Relighting of the historic sign will take place on Tuesday, Jan.10, at 4:30 p.m.

Highland Park residents who have yet to notice the Manning’s Coffee Store sign sitting on the roof of Las Cazuelas restaurant, might spot the historic sign after it’s all lit up. The sign, which has been positioned on top of the HLP eatery since it went out of business sometime during the 1960s, is getting a well-deserved makeover thanks to a little bit of elbow grease from a number of community members and organizations. “It turns out, it’s kind of important in terms of signage history because it combines neon with opal glass, and there’s very few of those in existence,” said Amy Inouye of Future Studio. “As well as the fact that there’s not any signs like this from Manning’s that we know of at all on the entire West Coast.” Innouye, …
