Get back on the streets and enjoy some art.
The weather oracles are predicting a cold and dry evening. Sounds like the perfect time to enjoy Second Saturday Gallery Night, organized by the good folks at NELAart--that’s the Northeast Los Angeles Arts Organization-- a wonderful evening of art and community for you--yes you--to enjoy. Cypress Park New Puppy Gallery 2808 Elm Street Los Angeles, CA 90065 The show Apology Accepted features over 40 woodblock and monoprints by Derek Cowan. The New Puppy tells us that “Cowan’s prints are a reminder of a waning book culture in an age of e-readers. He is a leading practitioner of fine printing, printmaking and bookmaking.” The show will only be on display this weekend. *** Finster Studio 2638 N. Figueroa Street Los Angeles, CA 90065 The …

A new bike lane was recently painted on York Boulevard, but community cyclists are still hoping 2011 will be the year for a bike corral in Highland Park.
A bike lane appeared on York Boulevard in Highland Park last week, but what is noticeably missing from the corner of York and Avenue 50 is the bike corral that community cycling advocates have been anticipating since early this year. The bike lane, which extends between Eagle Rock Boulevard in Eagle Rock and Avenue 55 in Highland Park, was a welcome surprise for the prospering bicycle community, offering much-needed protection from the relentless hustle of traffic on one of Highland Park's main thoroughfares. Missing, though, was a place for cyclists to park their gear. "Safety is huge," said Mount Washington cyclist Rob Richman. On his way to The Bicycle Doctor, a local bike shop that has catered to the city's cyclists for 25 years, …

Unfortunately, a more direct threat to Charles Lummis's cultural legacy is the state of the Lummis Home, long owned by the city of Los Angeles. By all means the Autry (and everyone else) should come tomorrow, tour the Lummis home, and see how the city has dropped the ball on another of the most historic buildings in Northeast LA.   more ›
