Outsider Art Sought for Lummis Day 7

Lummis Day looking for outsiders with an edge.

For the last six years, the annual Lummis Day celebration has honored the spirit of its namesake by showcasing Northeast Los Angeles's artistry and cultural diversity. The flavor of Lummis Day's "great gumbo" of art and culture has skewed toward the more traditional in recent years--calling on a familiar stable of local artists and musicians in an effort to create a family friendly event. This year, artistic curator Terri Lloyd is hoping to add a little spice. 2012's Lummis Day art exhibition, titled Outside, is seeking artists working on the fringes of Northeast Los Angeles arts scene to put their talents on display. "We're looking to go against the conventional norms of what is expected," said Lloyd. "We don't want any paintings of …

Photo Gallery: Heritage Square on Lummis Day

The second in Patch's two part Lummis Day photo gallery focuses on the proceedings at Heritage Square Museum.

The 6th Annual Lummis Day Festival was celebrated at two locations this year, the Lummis Home, or El Alisal, on 200 E. Ave 43., and Heritage Square Museum, at 3800 Homer Street. The second of our two Lummis Day photo galleries presents some sights captured during the celebration that took place at Heritage Square, which comprised numerous live musical acts, puppet shows, dancing, food and resource booths from numerous community groups. The first of our two Lummis Day photo galleries shows images from inside the Lummis Home, where locals recieved history lessons about Charles Fletcher Lummis, observed arts and crafts inspired by the Arroyo Arts and Crafts movement and strolled through the Lummis garden. You can find that gallery here.

Follow Patch for Lummis Day Festival Updates Throughout the Day

Highland Park-Mount Washington Patch will be posting pictures and videos live from Sunday's 6th annual Lummis Day Festival.

Update 1:12 p.m.: Dub8 took the stage about 10 minutes ago. The crowds around the stage are modest, right now, but people are definitley dancing and enjoying the music. Previously: After months of dedicated preparation, which included numerous fundraisers and organizational meetings, the Lummis Day Community Foundation and the Lummis Day Organizing Committee will present the sixth annual Lummis Day Festival of Northeast Los Angeles. Lummis Day is both a celebration of the festival's namesake, Charles Fletcher Lummis, as well the cultural legacy he left behind. Today's festivities promise a "great gumbo" of music, poetry, food and art, much of which will bear a stamp distinct to Northeast Los Angeles. Patch will be there to take photos and …

I agree that the Lummis home, El Alisal, would benefit from the help of more volunteers year-round, and for special events like Lummis Day, which I also attended yesterday. Step up, anyone with extra time! And the exhibit of birds, bugs etc. sounds great! The longtime caretaker organization has a historical focus and they do their job on that front. But to be fair, yesterday there were …   more ›

Lummis Day Celebrates Northeast L.A.'s Rich Cultural Heritage Today

The sixth annual Lummis Day celebration will take place this Sunday, June 5.

Northeast Los Angeles residents and neighbors on Sunday have the opportunity to enjoy a festival as diverse as the population and culture of their neighborhoods. The sixth annual Lummis Day celebration will take place on Sunday, June 5 at two locations, Charles Lummis’ homestead El Alisal and Heritage Square Museum, and will run from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. “This is a very exciting celebration of arts in our neighborhood and the community is well-represented in all aspects,” said Lummis Day planning board member Eliot Sekuler. “This year we really ventured out and did things we haven’t done before.” Some of those firsts include spoken word poetry accompanied by background music, performed by, among others, celebrated Los Angeles poet Wanda…

Unfortunately, a more direct threat to Charles Lummis's cultural legacy is the state of the Lummis Home, long owned by the city of Los Angeles. By all means the Autry (and everyone else) should come tomorrow, tour the Lummis home, and see how the city has dropped the ball on another of the most historic buildings in Northeast LA.   more ›

A Pocket Guide to Charles Fletcher Lummis, Grandfather of Arroyo Culture

Meet the Lummis behind Lummis Day.

You may already have made plans for Lummis Day, scheduled for Sunday, June 5, or you’ve seen the posters and signs. For lifelong residents of Highland Park and Mount Washington, Charles Fletcher Lummis is a household name--a mythical figure comprising equal parts Davy Crockett, Paul Bunyan and Mark Twain. Recent transplants to the area, though, might not be so familiar with the so-called "grandfather of Arroyo Culture." Others may find themselves asking what, exactly, is Lummis Day? In case you don’t know about Lummis, or have forgotten, here is my very brief biography.  There are many sources of additional biographical stuff about him, and I invite you to look them up. Charles Fletcher Lummis was born March 1, 1859, in Lynn, MA. He …

Video: El Alisal Filled With Support for Lummis Day Benefit

Approximately 140 people turned out for the sixth annual Lummis Day benefit.

Charles Fletcher Lummis celebrated diversity. On Saturday night, a gala and fundraiser was held at the pioneer folklorist’s home, in an effort to spread and reinforce Lummis’ beliefs. “Today we live in one of the most diverse cities in the world and Charles Lummis was speaking about this diversity way back then. It’s only fitting that we not only cite Charles Lummis, but do everything to preserve what he has left us,” 14th District L.A. City Council member José Huizar said, addressing the crowd of nearly 140 people in attendance. The annual benefit is in its sixth year and was put together by the Lummis Day Community Foundation, an organization composed entirely of volunteers. “Each year it’s a scramble to get it going and this is the lead…
