Volunteers were hard at work on Tuesday afternoon installing a new garage door at Fire Station 12, an effort that firefighters will help improve response times.
Every time an emergency call comes into Highland Park's Fire Station 12 on North Figueroa Street, firefighters must complete a brief, but needlessly time consuming, task--closing the garage's rear door. Manually cranking the chain that closes the rear door probably takes less than a minute, firefighters said, but when an all-hands emergency call comes in, those seconds matter. On Tuesday afternoon, volunteers Rick Marquez, of the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council (HHPNC), and Tony Howard, of American Legion Post 206, installed a brand new automatic garage door opener that would help Fire Station 12 save those valuable seconds. Highland Park Fire Station 12's garage door can get pretty hot during the summer time, occasionally reaching 140-degree Farenheit, according to Capt. Chris Segovia. Segovia explained that the engines and fire trucks at Station 12 are often charging or idling, which keeps the temperatures mercilessly high. As a result, the garage's back door is often left open, to allow cool air to flow in, and provide the crew a modicum of relief. However, as it's one of the oldest stations in the city, Station 12's back door needs to be manually closed by firefighters every time they leave the station, which is a minor but unnecessary increase to response times, Segovia said. A Los Angeles firefighter who was arrested in Highland Park this past week for allegedly attempting to buy heroin from an undercover LAPD officer was assigned to Fire Station 42 in Eagle Rock before he was put on paid administrative leave following the incident. Tony Ortiz, an LAFD captain at Fire Station 42, confirmed Tuesday that the arrested firefighter, Capt. Matthew Phillipsen, served at the Eagle Rock fire station, which is located on Colorado Boulevard, adjacent to Eagle Rock City Hall. Ortiz, who offered Patch readers a set of chimney safety tips for the holidays last year—also confirmed that Phillipsen lives in Highland Park. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics last week responded to a pair of incidents involving pedestrians struck by vehicles while attempting to navigate crosswalks, according to Capt. Tony Navarro. On Wednesday, Sept. 21, at around 6 p.m. 50-year-old male was struck while crossing at the crosswalk near Ave. 52 and N. Figueroa Street. The man was placed on backboard as a precautionary measure and taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital. On Thursday, Sept. 22 at around 7 p.m. paramedics transported a 52-year-old woman to Huntington Memorial Hospital after she was hit by a car while passing through the crosswalk at Aldama and Meridian Streets. The car caught on fire immediately after it was rear-ended going southbound on the 110 Friday.
Update: The California Highway Patrol has released its official report of the fatal car crash that took the life of an infant passenger on Friday evening. The report indicates that driver of the vehicle had pulled over in lane three of the Arroyo Seco Parkway due to a flat front passenger tire. "[The driver of the second vehicle] collided with the rear of the first vehicle. This caused [the first vehicle] to catch on fire and eventually become fully engulfed. The 1 year old passenger of [the first vehicle] became trapped in her car seat as a result of the collision.
