Louis Mraz, the Mount Washington motorist accused of running down a cyclist in Highland Park, used Monday's Mount Washington Homeowner's Alliance meeting to speak out against the "Figueroa for All" initiative.
Louis Mraz, the Mount Washington man arrested for running down a cyclist in Highland Park in June, is not keeping his feelings about bike riders to himself. During Monday's Mount Washington Homeowner's Alliance meeting, Mraz spoke out against the recently launched Figueroa for All initiative, which is an effort to make the Northeast L.A. thoroughfare safer for cyclists and pedestrians. Mraz, MWHA's vice president of land use, opened his Land Use Report by asking if anyone at the meeting “remembered the 1940’s” when Figueroa had one lane for cars and one lane for the Red Car. Mraz then told attendees that he’d read about a proposed plan – the Figueroa for All initiative, although Mraz didn’t mention it by name -- on the NELAlist forums. …

The Highland Park working group is scheduled to meet on Friday at the Flying Pigeon Bike Shop.
Josef Bray-Ali, owner Flying Pigeon Bike Shop on the border of Highland Park and Cypress Park, is more than just a cyclist. He's also a savvy businessman, a father of one young daughter and a civically engaged resident of Northeast Los Angeles. And "Figueroa for All," Bray-Ali's locally based working group focused on reimagining the transportation infrastructure on one of Highland Park's main thoroughfares, is about more than just bike lanes. "We don't want to just focus on bike lanes, because the city will just focus on that and tell us 'no,'" said Bray-Ali. Instead, he said he envisions a long-term, holistic planning process in which improving biking infrastructure is one part of a larger picture. Other imperatives, he said, would be …

Injured cyclist said she "won't ride again for fear of crossing him."
Louis Mraz, the Mount Washington man arrested for running down a cyclist in Highland Park, is due back in court on September 19. The accused was in court on Wednesday for a "violation hearing," which will be taken up during his pre-trial date in September. As previously reported on Patch, Mraz was arrested on Friday, July 8, on charges that he intentionally ran down a cyclist who was riding on Avenue 50 near Buchanan Street. He was released the same day on $80,000 bail. Winona Wacker, the cyclist who was allegedly run down by Mraz, shared her story with Patch shortly after the incident took place in May. “He laid on his horn, then yelled back at me, ‘You wanna test your weight against mine?’” Wacker said. “[He] continued blowing his horn, …

Photo lineup is scheduled for Wednesday.
The Los Angeles Police Department is close to making an arrest in connection to the alleged vehicular assault of a cyclist in Highland Park late last month, police said. "I believe I have identified the driver," Central Traffic Division Detective Felix Padilla told Highland Park-Mount Washington Patch. "He matches the description given to me by the victim. As previously reported on Patch, Highland Park resident Winona Wacker alleged that she was intentionally run down by an older Caucasian male in a white convertible Volvo C70 near the intersection of Avenue 50 and Buchanan Street. Wacker said she was cycling in front of the motorist for less than a block before he became irate and threatened to run her over for not clearing out of the …

Local cyclist said she is healing and waiting for LAPD to arrest the suspect who ran her down.
More than one week after being struck by a motorist near the intersection of Avenue 50 and Buchanan Street, Highland Park cyclist Winona Wacker said she is still waiting for the Los Angeles Police Department to arrest the suspect she alleges intentionally ran her down. "I have talked to LAPD a couple times, it is still currently in the investigation phase of the process," Wacker said. "I was informed that I can expect to hear from the detective soon, most likely today [Tuesday, June 7]. I have been kind of quiet so as to let the police do their job." Wacker told Highland Park-Mount Washington Patch that the motorist who ran her down is not only still on the loose in the neighborhood, but is also apparently making no effort to hide his …

Cyclist said she has filed report with LAPD's Northeast Division last week, but has yet to hear back.
Highland Park resident Winona Wacker said she was riding her bicycle along Ave. 50 last Friday when she had a dangerous encounter with a motorist in a white convertible. Wacker, said she was run down and knocked off her bicycle by the driver of a white convertible Volvo C70, and she told Highland Park-Mount Washington Patch that she believes the motorist struck her on purpose. According to Wacker, she was riding her bicycle near the intersection of Ave. 50 and Buchanan St. when the driver began honking and yelling at her to get out of the road. Wacker said she responded to the motorist, who she described as a white male who looked to be in his fifties, by telling him that she was allowed to use the whole lane for her safety. That response …

Not sure what you are saying. The videos are responsive to accusations made against cyclists, and show that motorists behave the same as their accusers. Is that rationalizing? Ok, fine. Anyway, I'd like to see your neighborhood where (you want to believe you see) most motorists stop at STOP signs.   more ›
