Tickets are $5.
Benjamin Franklin High School's football squad invites the community to a pancake breakfast to be held on Saturday, April 21 from 8-11 a.m. at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club at 1596 Yosemite Drive. Tickets for the breakfast are $5 and all proceeds will go toward supporting the football team. With LAUSD facing deep funding reductions across the board in 2012/2013, Franklin supporter Paul Bonsell said that boosters are doing whatever they can to help the team sustain. "We are trying to get creative with fundraising and a pancake breakfast is one of the ideas that we really liked," Bonsell said. The money will help the team purchase pads, athletic tape, cleats and other safety equipment, Bonsell said. "This is for the athletes' safety," …

Most media pundits echo the enthusiasm for the new Dodgers owner, but some are skeptical. Here's a roundup of opinions.
When news broke last night that pro basketball legend Magic Johnson and his group of investors had won bidding for the Dodgers, there was jubilation across Dodgertown. In the cold light of dawn, however, several pundits and media outlets are taking a hard look at what the new ownership will mean. Herewith a roundup of some of the analysis. What do you think? Los Angeles Times (Bill Plaschke) On more practical terms, it seems Johnson will be the owner with the most public accountability. Ticket snafu? Parking disaster? An unsafe situation in the stands? In promising to do things the right way, Johnson will probably be the owner who will answer and explain when they are done wrong. Los Angeles Daily News After the disaster of the McCourt …

The varsity squad will have played at least eight games over the break before returning to Northern League action.
Benjamin Franklin High School’s boys basketball coach Robin Cordona is still sorting out his starting rotation. The FHS (7-5, 2-0 Northern League) roster is comprised almost entirely of newcomers besides the lone returning player from last season’s squad. The team acquired some much needed experience this week, competing in four games at the La Salle/Temple City Holiday Classic in just as many days. “This was a real good tournament for us,” Cardona said. “We played some good games, but as I’ve mentioned before we’re inexperienced.” Franklin concluded the tourney with two wins and two losses. The Panthers picked up victories over Gabrielino High School (4-6) and Montebello High School (2-10), while suffering losses against Hoover (6-6) and …

Franklin's boys team has had its last three games decided by six points; The girls team drops its first decision since its season opening loss against San Gabriel High School.
Franklin High School’s varsity boys basketball team picked up a close win Tuesday night, topping Gabrielino High School, 50-48, in the squads second game of the La Salle/Temple City Holiday Classic. The Panthers (6-4, 2-0 Northern League) outscored the Eagles 30-19 in the first half, but allowed Gabrielino to get back in the game in the third quarter. The Eagles (2-6) put up nine more points than Franklin in the third, outscoring the Panthers 29-20 after the break. FHS had three players who scored in double figures. Leading the way for Franklin was Zachary Hinton with 19 points on an 8-for-16 shooting effort from the floor. Hinton was also a major factor on the boards, yanking down 24 rebounds on the night. Senior Israel Suarez contributed…

Franklin High School's girls and boys varsity basketball programs compete in holiday tournaments.
While local students, teachers and administrators are relaxing over winter break, both Franklin High School varsity basketball teams are putting in work on the hardwood. Franklin’s girls team kicks off action at La Cañada High School today. The Panthers take on Hart High School (2-8) in the team’s first game of La Canada New Year's Ball tournament. This will be the fourth game for the Panthers in the young season. FHS was on the losing end, 75-30, of its season opening contest against Garfield High School. Results for Franklin’s recent Northern League match ups against Wilson and Lincoln were unavailable. Rena Tomihara led the squad in scoring against Garfield, scoring 14 points on a 4-for-13 shooting effort. Hart is coming off back-to-…

Lincoln snaps Franklin's three-game winning streak, beating the Panthers for a second consecutive season.
The scoreboard situated at Franklin High School’s football field reflected the effort exerted by the players on the field on Friday night. Lincoln High School dampened senior night for Franklin and may have eliminated the Panthers chances of moving into the post season with a 34-8 victory over FHS. “You returners, you gotta remember this,” head coach Eric Jaimes told his team as he pointed towards the scoreboard. “Typically a team stops throwing the ball, but you see they were still trying to score. You just got to take it on the chin this time.” “Only you know if you can leave with your head up, but as a team we didn’t put it together,” a displeased Jaimes added. The Panthers (6-4, 3-2 Northern League) offense sputtered all night and was …

The graffiti tagged on FHS' field house said derogatory things about the Panthers, while praising Eagle Rock High School.
The biggest rivalry in Northeast Los Angeles was the motivation behind an act of vandalism that was discovered at Franklin High School Friday morning. "I got to work about 7 a.m. and found graffiti on the west side by the athletics section of our campus," Franklin principal Joseph Nacorda said. "There were about 18 different [tags] all around the field house, which is our varsity football locker room." Nacorda said the vandalism, which was done in green spray paint, bad-mouthed Franklin and praised Eagle Rock High School. Among the obscenities that marked up the field house included sayings such as "Traitor", "Eagle Rock House"and "F--k FHS." Nacorda added that certain jersey numbers from Franklin's team had also been spray painted on the …
FHS is riding a three game winning streak.
The fans in the bleachers on the home side at Eagle Rock High School didn't make much noise after the first quarter of Friday night's game. Benjamin Franklin High School limited the ERHS to just one score in a 30-7 Northern League triumph over the Eagles. "It's hard to bounce back after playing a team like Roybal that isn't there yet and these guys responded," head coach Eric Jaimes said." ERHS (3-6, 2-2 Northern League) put it's lone touchdown on the board midway through the first quarter. Senior quarterback Jordan Hayes provided much of the offense on the Eagle's lone scoring drive. Hayes carried the ball four times, netting 64 yards on the Eagles only scoring drive of the night. Franklin (6-3, 3-1) responded in the second when Anthony …

Panthers and Eagles head into tonight's game with identical league records, tied for second place behind Marshall.
Benjamin Franklin High School and Eagle Rock High School will battle it out under the lights at ERHS for the first time in their historic rivalry. Friday night’s Northern League contest was originally scheduled to be played in the afternoon at 3 p.m., due to the Eagles’ lack of lights on their field. But that changed a couple of weeks ago when Eagle Rock installed permanent lights. Despite the magnitude of the game, ERHS head coach Greg Pierce said his team prepared for this game and are doing their best to approach it as they do every other opponent. “Eagle Rock and Franklin has always been a very good rivalry. We have not beat them since 2007, but it’s just another league game for us,” Pierce said. The Eagles (3-5, 2-1 Northern League) …

Panthers churn out their second highest offensive output of the season, racking up 307 yards on 35 plays.
There’s no scoreboard on the Roybal High School football field and the portable game clock stopped working at the end of the first quarter. It may have been for the best that both were out of sight and of mind for Roybal, as Benjamin Franklin High School spoiled senior night for the Titans, holding them scoreless in a 28-0 Northern League triumph on Friday night. Despite a lackluster performance, the Panthers were able to still come out on top. “A little flat guys, a little flat. We’ve got to play better,” head coach Eric Jaimes told his squad after the game. “But this game is over and you got your biggest game coming up next week against Eagle Rock.” Franklin (5-3, 2-1 Northern League) put its first points on the board when quarterback …
