Had a Bike Stolen? The Sheriff's Department May Have It

The department arrested three men for the burglaries of around 50 bicycles all over Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Orange counties.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has around 50 bicycles recovered in a bike burglary sting, and they are looking for owners who have been the victim of a bike theft. Three men were arrested at a bike owner's home in Rancho Cucamonga as they were preparing to enter a garage and steal a bike.  The group had been repeatedly posing as potential bike buyers on Craigslist, and then establishing enough information about the buyer to find their addresses.   They also used publicly posted information on Facebook and the White Pages website to find people selling bikes, according to a release from the department. The trio would then take the stolen bikes, which were usually high-end bikes worth between $5,000 and $15,000, and sell them at…

Rival Gangs Active in Northeast L.A.

Smaller gangs are trying to establish themselves in Northeast L.A., according to the Los Angeles Times.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Division Gang unit believe a recent spate of violence in the area may be the result of smaller neighborhood gangs looking to "humiliate" a once powerful and violent local power, according to the Los Angeles Times. In an article posted by the Times on Thursday morning, officers from the gang unit said that two recent shootings on Drew Street in Glassell Park--once the home base to the Avenues gang, which plagued the area with violent crime and drug dealing--may have been committed by members of up and coming gangs looking to establish themselves in the area. From the Los Angeles Times: "Because the Avenues' power is weakening, [smaller gangs are] able to come in" and commit …

Monte Vista Violence Slows After Shooting Arrests

Detective Rick Ortiz said it has been a quiet month for violent crimes in Highland Park.

After experiencing a rash of shootings and various other aggravated assaults throughout March and April, LAPD Northeast Division Gang Unit Detective Rick Ortiz reported that its been a peaceful month so far in Highland Park. Ortiz said the surge of violent crime seems to have been stemmed following the arrest of two known gang members--19-year-old Edwin Celis and 23-year-old Edwin Ramirez--in connection with the shooting of a 13-year-old male on Drew Street in Glassell Park. The two suspects were arrested on Thursday, April 26--the same day as the shooting. "There was an arrest made in that shooting, for some reason since that arrest we haven't had another shooting," Detective Ortiz said. "It's kind of interesting, that sort of violence is…

Mount Washington Residents Warn of Magazine Subscription Scam

Residents says youths posing as students of Franklin High School may be trying to scam residents.

Several Mount Washington residents have in the last week raised suspicions about young adults claiming to be students from Franklin High School, who have been going door to door in the neighborhood pretending to sell magazine subscriptions for a school fundraiser. Residents have reported that the alleged scammers--who appear to be high school aged or slightly older--have appeared at their door after dark, saying that they were raising funds to restore arts programs at Franklin High School. In an e-mail to Highland Park-Mount Washington Patch, one resident said that the two youths did not attempt to prove that they were affiliated with the school in any way. "They went into a spiel presenting themselves as my neighbors, from "over on San …

People are stealing the compressors because they want airconditioning or they need a new compressor. I work in New Orleans, LA part time where stealing compressors is common occurence. I learned that when the compressor is installed, you must have them bolted in with a cast iron cage to prevent theft or make them inaccessible. Essentially, lock them up. It is a sign of the times.   more ›
