Flores founded and ran US Office Machines, a Highland Park fixture.
Jesse James Flores--known to many Highland Park residents as the owner of US Office Machines--died on Thursday, Nov. 8. He was 89 years old. Flores established US Office Machines in 1962 at the corner of North Figueroa Street and South Avenue 58, where it continued to prosper well after typewriters fell out of common usage. In addition to running the shop, Flores was also known to many Highland Park residents for his role as Santa Claus during numerous Christmas parades in the 1970s. In his later life, Flores enjoyed dancing at The Highlands dance club, located at 104 N. Ave. 56. Eagle Rock’s foremost green visionary died as the result of a fall, sustained while working on a tree in his garden.
Scott Wilson, a longtime Eagle Rock resident, retired Eagle Rock High School teacher and landscape architect who was instrumental in the greening of large parts of the neighborhood, died Monday morning from a weekend fall sustained while cutting flowers from a tree in the garden of his Olson Street home. He was 89. Shortly after the incident Saturday, paramedics rushed Wilson to Glendale Adventist Hospital, where he never regained consciousness, said his daughter Christine Richards. He passed away peacefully at the hospital, with his family present by his side, she added. Our beloved mother and grandmother Leona Pearl DeWitt, 91, of Highland Park passed away Oct. 17th 2011, at Royal Palms Convalescent Hospital in Glendale, CA. The friendly pet shop owner was a modern day Renaissance Man.
Hervey Chapman, longtime owner of the Verdugo Pet Shop on York Boulevard, died Thursday afternoon at UCLA Medical Center at the age of 73. Hervey was diagnosed with leukemia after a coughing fit landed him in Sherman Oaks Hospital shortly after Christmas. Since then, Hervey had been moved to UCLA Medical Center, where he was undergoing chemotherapy. An avid runner, dancer, hiker and animal lover, Chapman was best known as the shy, friendly man behind the counter of the Vergudo Pet Shop on 5022 York Blvd. Chapman was also a devoted clogger, who had even installed a clogging floor in his home where he would practice his dancing.
