Eight home burglaries were reported in Highland Park in February.
After last week warning Northeast Los Angeles residents of a rise in "distraction burglaries," the Los Angeles Police Department on Tuesday released some tips that can be used to prevent such crimes. From the Los Angeles Police Department: Criminals sometimes use force to break through a door, but often, they use a scam to get us to open the door for them—bypassing our deadbolts and security systems in the process. The LAPD wants to make the community aware of this problem and provide tips to avoid becoming a victim. First, look before unlocking your door's deadbolt lock. Install a peep hole if your door does not have one. Remember, you do not need to unlock the door to talk. They may state there is an emergency, so help them by calling …
The tapas restaurant will open its doors on Wednesday, Feb. 29.
Restaurateurs have been looking for the recipe for success at 5137 York Blvd. for the last two years--as both Marty's Bar and Cafe Lobos have failed to thrive at the location. However, Chef Huntley See--who will open Highland Park Kitchen (HPK) at the former Marty's/Lobos location on Wednesday, February 29--is hoping he has all the right ingredients. As passersby have already noticed, See has installed a window at the front of HPK--giving the restaurant a more open and inviting feel. See said the menu of contemporary style tapas--including "pomegranate ceviche, carne asada fries and Sliders"--will also invite a steady stream of customers to HPK. Prices will be in the $10-$30 according to HPK's Facebook page. Adult beverages, like "the …
Not much has changed in Highland Park and Mount Washington in the latest proposal.
The shape of Los Angeles' political landscape for the next decade is one step closer to being finalized. The Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission--after a marathon meeting last Wednesday--released their final boundary proposal on Monday. While some last minute tweaks have taken place far from Northeast Los Angeles--most notably the return of Westchester to Councilman Bill Rosendahl's CD 11 and Councilman José Huizar's coup of the coveted Downtown district--not much has changed for Highland Park and Mount Washington residents. As in previously proposed maps, Highland Park would still be mostly encompassed by Council District 1--with a sliver of Garvanza being used by Council District 14 as a link between Eagle Rock in the north…

Try these, at the commission's own site: http://redistricting2011.lacity.org/LACITY/draftMap.html ...they're easier to zoom in on, but they've also made the boundary lines so very thick, that if you're close to a border between districts, if may be a bit difficult to know for sure on which side you actually have ended up.   more ›
Saying goodbye to a short-lived resident of York Boulevard.
People come and go in one’s life. Especially here in the big city. We meet people and to one degree or another we get to know them and then they are gone. Seems like we forget most of those people; that’s just the way these kind of things go. This is no less true for those of us who like to support small businesses. They come and go, and we tend forget most of them. One of our local gallery boutiques is closing next month. La Vida Loca Galeria will be no more after the end of March. This shop in Highland Park is a unique place--and that will make it much more unforgettable. Owner Anita Acosta tells Patch, “We have had a wonderful ride with the store. This store was never about money, but was purely a way to bring community together. The …

The 2012 California Academic Decathlon kicks off March 16 in Sacramento.
After months of diligent study, nine students from Highland Park are about to put their knowledge to the test in one of California's most prestigious academic competitions. Franklin High School’s academic decathlon team amassed 47,812.3 out of 60,000 possible points in the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Academic Decathlon competition, good for a fourth place overall finish and will compete in the California Academic Decathlon next month. “The decathlon is challenging itself, but the thing that is important to remember is that it’s not just about you, it’s about your teammates as well,” senior Wendy Renteria said. “You have to try your best, not for yourself and your own individual medals because it’s for the team, we’re all working …

The federal holiday was originally celebrated on Feb.22, but changed in 1968.
For many, President’s Day means nothing more than a three day weekend and shopping, but the holiday was originally meant to commemorate our country’s founding father—President George Washington. Originally signed into law by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1879 and implemented in 1880, the federal holiday was the first to single out a citizen’s birthdate and only impacted District of Columbia federal workers at the time. In 1885, President Grover Cleveland signed a law extending the holiday to all federal workers in thirty-eight states, according to the National Archives and Records Administration. Less than a century later, the holiday was moved to the third Monday of February, largely spurred by the belief the shift would reduce …

"Quixote in L.A.," an independent film shot in Highland Park, takes a unique view at the lives of Mexican Americans in Highland Park.
Producer Kyle Wegner contacted Patch earlier this week with a link to the above trailer for Quixote in L.A., which was shot last year in Highland Park. The plot tells the story of male protagonist who decides to steal a conquistador's uniform from the Southwest Museum of the American Indian--but, of course, there's much more to it than that. "Our goal was to make a film that both [writer/director Eric Putzi and I] would be interested in watching, one that portrays the Mexican American community and Mexican Americans in an atypical way as compared to many Hollywood produced films," Wegner said. "The film can be described as both satire and comedy. Mexican American culture has a long history and tradition of satire." Quixote received an …
Six cart thefts were reported in the neighborhood in the last week.

"Over the past week there has been an increase in GTA(Grand Theft Auto). Most of the vehicles have been taken from the street and parking lots of local businesses," said Senior Lead Officer Nina Preciado in a statement released by e-mail on Thursday. "They have occurred in the late night/early morning hours. The vehicles taken continue to be the Honda and Toyota's. Please take a few minutes to make sure your vehicle is secure. Here are a few tips on how to prevent your vehicle from being stolen." According to crimemapping.com, six cart thefts were reported to the LAPD between Saturday, Feb. 11 and Thursday, Feb…
