L.A. Works Day 2012

L.A. Works Day 2012 Dates:  July 21, 2012 - July 21, 2012

Make a lasting contribution to the public safety and well-being of more than 4 million Angelenos by joining forces with the Los Angeles Fire Department, L.A. Works, and more than 1,500 community and corporate volunteers at this historic service event.
Last year alone, the men and women of the LAFD responded 713,762 times to distress and emergency calls of neighbors in need. These courageous First Responders risk their lives on a daily basis to preserve life and property. They also promote public safety and help foster economic growth in neighborhoods across Los Angeles. As an expression of thanks for their service, L.A. Works volunteers will transform the LAFD’s recently purchased Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center into a space that these local heroes can call home.
Designated a California State Historic Landmark in 1989 as the largest enclosed structure without columns in the world, this Art Deco building was the largest and second-oldest Navy Reserve Center in the United Stages. The military vacated the building in 1995 and leased it to the LAFD for their use. It is now the site of the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center named after a firefighter who, while fighting a fire at the Navy Reserve Center in 1980, fell through a fire-weakened roof and died. This year, the LAFD will complete a multi-year purchasing process to finally own the property.
