Old Southwest Party: "Money and Magic"

The Historical Society of Southern California will hold its annual fundraiser at the Lummis Home.

The historic home built in the late 19th century by journalist, poet, pioneering photographer, and Indian Rights activist Charles F. Lummis will provide a romantic backdrop to the evening's events.

There will be music, food and beverages, and a special stage presentation.

The theme of the evening is Money and Magic in the Old Southwest. Famous magicians Pop Haydn, six-time recipient of the Performer of the Year Award from the Magic Castle, and Phil Van Tee will explain and demonstrate some of the magic effects and card games that were popular in California in the 19th century. These games were originally developed for the sole purpose of cheating the trusting players out of their money. Variations of these games have evolved into the magical effects presented by modern magicians, while games like Three Card Monte, the Shell Game, and Fast and Loose are still played in their original form and with the original intent in the streets of many cities.

There will be a silent auction of items including historic photos, books, artwork, behind the scenes tours of the Lummis Home, gourmet restaurant meals, a studio tour, and many valuable items donated by members and supporters of the Historical Society of Southern California. The guests will have the opportunity to buy in and participate in personal demonstrations of the classic games that were played in Gold Rush California. The secret of each game will be auctioned off, so the highest bidder will go home knowing how the cheat is performed.

All proceeds will go to support the preservation of the Lummis Home.

The evening’s guests will fill their plates high with western barbecued meats, sausages, and salmon. For those who prefer a vegetarian fare there will be broiled portobello mushrooms and vegetables skillfully prepared by the Argentinean chef Carlos Bonavita.  Western outfits and period costumes are welcome. Hats, yes. Guns, no
