Known around the tweeting world as #twowheeltuesday, televison star Austin Nichols will Grand Marshal the 11th Annual Los Angeles River Ride, one of L.A. County’s biggest and best-loved bicycle events, The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) will host the L.A. River Ride on Sunday, June 5 at the Autry Center in Griffith Park. All area cyclists are invited to participate.

Thanks to the work of LACBC Austin and others have noticed the improvements in Los Angeles Austin notes, “Everywhere I look I see more and more riders in Los Angeles.  I see healthier, happier and wealthier as well.” 

 

The day-long event will feature bicycle rides specially designed to accommodate every age and skill level.  Proceeds from this fund-raising event will go toward helping make Los Angeles County more bike-friendly. Children riders under 12 will be admitted free.

 

All rides will start and finish at The Autry Center, parking for the 100, 70, 50 and 36 mile rides will be at 1625 Flower Street in Glendale.  Rides are as follows:

 

CENTURY (100 MILES)

If you've never done one, this ride is the perfect time to try it. The profile is very flat, very few inclines and none of them steep. This ride will showcase the changes that Long Beach has made with their Sharrows (Shared Lane Markings). Registration opens at 6:00 a.m. Ride starts at 7:00 a.m. Cost: $55 ($65 after May 15)

 

70 MILE RIDE "Park to Playa to Park"

From Griffith Park to Shoreline Aquatic Park, Long Beach, and return. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m. Ride starts at 7:30 a.m. Cost: $55 ($65 after May 15)

 

HALF CENTURY (50 MILES)

From Griffith Park to the City of Paramount and return. Registration starts at 7:00 a.m. Ride starts at 8:00 a.m. Cost: $45 ($55 after May 15)

 

36 MILE TRAINING RIDE

From The Autry to Maywood Riverfront Park and back. You'll spend 8 miles on the river path and detour through downtown for the remaining miles. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. Ride starts at 8:30 a.m. Cost: $45 ($55 after May 15)

 

15 MILE FAMILY RIDE

This ride is perfect for families as the entire route is on a dedicated bike path on the river. For ages 7 and up. Kids 12 and under ride free courtesy the City of Paramount. All Children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration starts at 10:00 a.m. Ride starts at 11:00 a.m. Cost: $40 ($50 after May 13)

KIDS' RIDE AND FUN FAIR

This year the Kid's Ride is FREE courtesy of the City of Paramount.  The ride will introduce young children to important bike safety lessons through fun, interactive activities.  Kids 6 and under will practice their riding techniques on a festive bike loop. Bikes and tricycles are welcome.  Cost: FREE

 

All riders must wear a helmet. Prizes and t-shirts will be provided for all registrants.  Registration and festivities begin at 10:00 a.m. to allow families the option to also join the Family Ride at 11 a.m.

 

Moms in Motion and YES Sports are putting together a safety rodeo and other fun activities for the youngest riders.

 

Riders should bring their own refillable water bottle, as water will be made available at each pit stop. Technical and medical support will be made available along the ride. The event will feature rest stops with music, food and fun. 

 

 Bicyclists can also register the day of the event.  Riders will be given $10 off the registration fee by becoming an LACBC member. 

 

Event sponsors include: Autry National Center, Specialized, REI, City of Paramount, L.A. County Supervisors Don Knabe, Michael D. Antonovich and Zev Yaroslavsky, L.A. City Councilmembers Tom LaBonge, Ed Reyes, and Eric Garcetti, Herbalife, Geklaw.com, Laemmle Theatres, Metro, Los Angeles World Airports, New Belgium Brewing, 100.3 The Sound, Clif Bar, Sparkletts, Cafecito Organico, Youth Educational Sports, Inc., Moms In Motion, City of Maywood, City of Long Beach, and City of Glendale.

 

Proceeds raised by the L.A. River Ride goes to the LACBC - a non-profit bicycle advocacy organization dedicated to making LA County a safe and enjoyable place to bicycle.  The coalition works to implement bike facilities, including bike lanes, bike paths, bike routes and bike parking.  The coalition also works to educate motorists, bicyclists and the general public on bicycling issues.
