Graduating Franklin Seniors to Receive Scholarships Today

About 125 students will be awarded a range of scholarships, including the Chief Daryl Gates Scholarship.

Some 125 Franklin High School students set to graduate next month will receive scholarships at a ceremony on campus Thursday evening.

Starting at $800, the scholarships include the Chief Daryl Gates Scholarship and the Andrew Hoyos Memorial Scholarship, according to Maria Soldevilla, Franklin’s college counselor.

(Former Los Angeles Police Department chief Gates, who died at the age of 83 in 2010, was a Franklin alumnus, as was Hoyos, a Franklin counselor and ESL teacher.)

The scholarships are scheduled to be awarded at 5 p .m in the boys’ gym after a ceremony at the same venue in which a number of seniors will be recognized for their academic achievements as well as extracurricular contributions and talents, Soldevilla said.

Franklin has about 300 seniors in its graduating class. Graduation is scheduled June 7.
