Franklin High School to Compete in Academic Decathlon

Los Angeles Unified School District Academic Decathlon champion Marshall High and 11 other district teams have qualified to compete in the California Academic Decathlon March 20-23 in Sacramento.

Marshall won the district decathlon with 55,785.7 points out of a possible 65,400, while three-time defending national champion Granada Hills Charter was second with 55,728.4, according to results announced Friday night at the awards ceremony at Hollywood High School.

The other qualifiers for the state decathlon were El Camino Real Charter (55,356.4); Taft Charter (46,874.9); Franklin (46,763.3); Garfield (45,070); Bell (45,016.3); Hamilton (44,419.9); Narbonne (43,814.3); and Van Nuys (42,816).

Grant qualified for the state championship for the first time, while North Hollywood also qualified. Their scores were not available.

For the second consecutive year, Marvin Paparisto of Marshall was the top individual scorer with 9,154.3 points. Teammate Aninda Bhowmick was the top scorer in the Scholastic Division for students with grade point averages between 3 and 3.74 with 8,801.4. Rohan Boone from El Camino Real was the top scorer in the Varsity Division for students with GPAs of 2.99 or lower with 8,315 points.

Kenia Gomez from Fremont High School won the Coach of the Year award.

The Academic Decathlon began Jan. 25 at the Roybal Learning Center near downtown Los Angeles, with members of 59 teams competing in the speech, interview and essay categories.

The competition concluded last Saturday, also at the Roybal Learning Center, with tests in art, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music and social science and the Super Quiz.

The study topic was World War I.
