Neighborhood Council Will Consider Funding Veterans' Memorial Facelift

A total of $17,500 in improvements for the square are up for discussion at Thursday night's neighborhood council meeting.

plans to tackle a full agenda on Thursday evening, which is set to include a list of funding requests to improve the Veteran's Square Memorial at the intersection of York Blvd. and N. Figueroa Street.

The list of proposed improvements, which amounts to $17,500, includes:

  • Bronze Metal Plaque ($5,000)
  • Payment of Monthly Department of Water and Power bill ($100/month)
  • Repair of flag's haylard and rigging ($50)
  • Repair Spa Filter Pump ($500)
  • Clean and Paint Flagpole ($2,500)
  • Repair of Replace Spotlights ($300 - $1,000)
  • Repair Lifted Sidewalks ($3,000)
  • Repair Irrigation System and Timer ($250 - $1,000)
  • Repair Fountain and Add Timer ($250-$1,000)
  • Plantings and Irrigation of Senior Center Green Belt ($2,500)

Though the funding requests are up for initial approval by the board tonight, they could not receive final approval by the budget and finance committee until the following year, as the neighborhood council has already expended close to the entire balance of this year's budget, according to treasurer Mark Reback.

Other items on tonight's agenda include several discussions about how the council should approach distributing neighborhood purposes grants in the coming year, a conversation about whether the neighborhood council should advocate for city council redistricting and a request for $1,000 by Yorkdale Elementary School for a community fair.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. at the Highland Park Senior Citizen's Center on 6152 N. Figueroa. St.
