Gardea First Candidate to Qualify for CD1 Race

The candidate's 500 signatures were qualified on Thursday.

Council District 1 Candidate Jose Gardea on Thursday become the first to qualify for the March 5 ballot.

The City Clerk's Election Division on Thursday verified 500 of the 912 signatures collected from registered voters in CD 1 supporting Gardea's campaign. Gardea submitted the signatures Wednesday, Nov. 14.

City Council Candidates must submit signatures by Wednesday, Dec. 5.

"I am appreciative of the outpouring of support from people throughout the First District," said Gardea, in a statement released to the press. "I had leaders from every community in the district come out to help me gather signatures. It's an important step, but there's still a lot more work to do."

Gardea, current Councilman Ed Reyes' longtime chief of staff, is tentatively set to square off against three other candidates. Assembly District 45 Representative Gil Cedillo, local businessman Jesse Rosas and former Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council Member William Morrison are all still gathering signatures.

The four candidates will meet in a forum hosted by the Mount Washington Homeowners Alliance at the Carlin G. Smith Recreation Center on Monday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.

To be an effective councilman, you must be knowledgeable of the politics of City Hall. Sadly, "You must be a politician to navigate, to accomplish and achieve goals." What experience and resume does Jesse Rosas bring to his candidacy for CD 1? Does Jesse Rosas have the ability to communicate his vision and plan for CD 1? I checked out his website and I was not impressed! As for Gil Cedillo, I am not interested in anyone who actually considered running the 710 Extension through Highland Park. As for William Rodriguez Morrison, his website states, "Mr. Morrison’s decision to run comes at a critical time in the history of our state and region with issues such as “gay rights” extending to the concept of openly gay marriage, further erosion of the laws on marijuana use and the failure of any venue of government in dealing with the continued destruction of human life in the form of abortion, Mr. Morrison believes that now is the time for all Americans to restore the values that made this country the greatest in the world. William believes that his Democratic opponent would simply offer “more of the same” on the “values” issue which frame the debate as the nation struggles with an ever more lax moral fabric."

La Casa, maybe you can attend the candidate form to get know more about the candidates. Some information does not give you the whole picture. It is difficult to get a great website and get your name out there in the public when you have little funding and are not a government employee. Jesse Rosas has been working in the community for a very long time. He knows the issues. And, he works for the community without getting a pay check. That gives major points in my book. Hope you attend the candidate forum.

Morrison's website is not that great either. http://morrison4citycouncil.com/forums/forum/education-in-district-1/

At last Jesse's website is much easier to understand. http://rosas4citycouncil.org/Home_Page.html

@ nonoise, Jesse works hard in the community? You could say that about a number of people here in Highland Park, whom have also worked very hard in the the community for a long time, and without a paycheck. The council district is not only in our bubble. Jose is the only one who is qualified to manage the district. Jesse couldn't even manage the treasurer's chair when he was in the Neighborhood Council. There were questionable discrepancies in the handling of the funding. Gil is just plain slimy, but will get over on the people in PIco Union, and Westlake. Jose is very smart, resourceful, and unvarnished, unlike many other poly-ticians. He is NOT Reyes. CD1 would benefit from electing him.

CBF, go back to bed, and stop trying to pretend you know what you're talking about. Why'd you come here, anyway? Just so you could tell the locals whats what? Get off it!

@ManOfGooGooClusters Aren't you late for church?? OR, is this your way of playing God,oh self imposed Lord of the Patch, verbal rebuker and smiter to anyone else with an OP. You're a real meanie, lately
nonoise November 18, 2012 at 06:12 PM
Jose never cared to help to shut off those noisy church bells (tape recording from 4 bullhorns) from Divine Saviour Catholic Church. And, Gil didn't care either. Jose and Gil are earning a paycheck for the so-called work they do (or don't really do). The other candidates running are working for free. A number of people in the community do work for free and that is great. But there are only a couple of those that are running for office. If Jose was really working that hard for the community then why do we have the problems that we have? Too many liquor stores, broken sidewalks, no bus benches, loud train horns, loud bus station at Avenue 28, dirty streets, too many parking meters, ect, ect. Elect someone that knows the problems and knows how to solve them and that is not Gil or Jose.

Jesse simply is not qualified. He's chasing the payday, which is huge($187,000+100,000 discretionary). Nice try though
nonoise November 18, 2012 at 06:53 PM
Everyone else is chasing it too. From one government job to another, Gil and Jose are perfect examples and so are Councilmember Jan Perry and Garcetti (running for mayor). None of these people can make it in private life. They keep chasing down those government (taxpayer) jobs where they can do nothing. Tell me which candidate is not chasing the pay day. And, you think President Obama was qualified? Many elected have no prior experience and learn on the job. But Jesse lives in the community and knows the community and knows the problems and knows what is needed to solve them. Gil and Jose don't. Reply
nonoise November 18, 2012 at 07:24 PM
Jose worked for Reyes. What kind of job did Reyes do? A bad job. Jose is more of the same.
nonoise November 18, 2012 at 07:27 PM
Did Jose write up the letter from Reyes written on city letterhead "encouraging" Divine Saviour Catholic Church to take me to court? Who wrote the letter? Jose? By the way, they lost. I won. Did Jose write the letter?
The MOG November 19, 2012 at 12:17 AM
LOL Yes, I was indeed late to church, but I was late coming back. So, I suppose that even things out a bit. What do you mean I've been a meanie lately? Just because I razzed Harvey about not taking the time to walk across the street to the Vet's Parade? I think the critism was fair, may have been a low blow calling him out by name. It's nothing personal. I think I understand him, and have a good impression of him, but don't know him personally. It isn't mean to suggest a newbie learn about the political heritage & history of their adopted councilmatic district, before they attempt to give an informed opinion. Mr. Reyes, & Jose's political fortunes sprung from the loins of Mike Hernandez. Heard of him? The history of our gerrimandered district goes back to Molina. I won't bore you with the details of why many of us think the late Art Snyder was the last, truly great Councilman we had. You wouldn't understand such things anyway, even if it jumped up to bite you. Working now to get a member of the HHPNC on the ballot. We have until Dec. 5th to collect the required signatures. If that fails, I will work for Jesse. Qualified? You got to be at least 18, & eligible to vote. He's qualified!
nonoise November 19, 2012 at 02:16 AM
Who are you trying to get on the ballot from the Highland Park NC?
The MOG November 19, 2012 at 04:33 AM
Hi nonoise! Pastor Randy is collecting signatures.
The MOG November 19, 2012 at 06:53 AM
I think what this area needs is a candidate who is a real go getter! Someone the people know will be honest, and a hard worker. A caring individual who will inspire trust & confidence. Someone intelligent, strong, with above average leadership abilities, charismatic, and insightful. The more I think about it, the more I think I should run! Sorry, just had me meds...just kiddin ;-}'
nonoise November 20, 2012 at 03:27 PM
Great! I have great respect for Pastor Randy. He is the only pastor in Northeast that shows respect and has a heart. I have spoken to a few pastors in Northeast and he is the only one that has earned my respect. Pastor Randy is a great guy. It has been a long time since I have seen him but when you talk to him it is like no time has passed. Good Luck to him. He actually practices what he preaches. Unlike Father Marco Oritz from Divine Saviour Catholilc church and their members. Maybe they should go to Pastor Randy's church. They could learn a lot. But then maybe not, people that are blind choose not to see the truth. Father Marco is no Pastor Randy. That's for sure. Good Luck Pastor Randy!!
nonoise November 20, 2012 at 03:32 PM
Boring meeting. Gil spent an hour mentioning his endorsements (boring). Jose spent time about what he would do. In 12 years working for Reyes, why didn't he do those things? (boring). Never vote for a city employee looking for their next job. William was interesting and gave good reasons for not voting for Gil and Jose. Jesse is a community activist that knows the issues and what needs to be done. He lives in our district. Vote for someone that has worked hard for the community with no paycheck for doing the community work he does.

You know who, is a slick little willy who knows how to get over on people by playing favorite uncle. It requires no skill. I've witnessed his "work in the community". It's not hard to serve it up, clean it up, or pay for lunch. Doesn't make u qualified to make decisions on behalf of all of the other Angelenos who also live here. Can we stop electing reps to council that are just plain insufficient? Once the "favorite uncles/aunties" become elected, and taste the blood of the city fat CC paycheck, we become more and more like statistics, rather than people. They go for easy money, since their skillset is under par. And we've been had in the process. Cluck (PS:@ nonoise, try going over to the bellringer's house at 8 o'clock in the evening, while they are settling down for dinner, or the evening news and blasting some bells outside their door. When they come out irritated, just smile and ask them to turn their dam bells off, or you'll come by every night and day at certain hours to ring- a- ding- ding. Get some other church bell haters to join. After all, tis' the season....... Better check with the cops first. Good cluckin luck with that. What IS hard is what La Casa de Bernarda Alba said.
