Public Safety Cmte Mtg, Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council

Please come to show your support to our next Public Safety Cmte meeting where we will vote on the purchase of green CERT vests and helmets for graduating students.  If you weren't aware, LAFD no longer has the funds to distribute these important items, which help residents identify CERT members after a disaster, and boosts morale of CERT members who feel proud wearing and displaying their uniforms.

Our Neighborhood Council will be the FIRST in the city to help fill the void if this $2000 request for CERT uniforms is approved.  We are hoping to inspire other NCs to do the same as well since CERT is such an important component of public safety in a crisis or disaster.  CERT Leader Capt. Stacy Gerlich said she would work with the ASNC to get the same bulk discount they receive from SOS Survival Products.

We will also discuss the upcoming CERT communications drill in our area as well as a new CERT beginners training class being offered in Hermon starting Mar 15th!

ARROYO SECO NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL (ASNC)

Public Safety Committee Agenda
Meeting Area, Fresco Community Market
5914 Monterey Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90042
Wed, Mar 9, 2011 –7:00 p.m.

I.          Opening remarks and welcome to membership *

II.        Stakeholder comments on non-agenda items within the scope of committee’s mandate ** (2 mins. ea.).

III.       Old Business:A.   ASNC CERT medical kit – status of purchase of replacement supplies (expired shelf life)

IV.       New Business:A.   New Community Project Funding Request –

Discussion of the following motion:

1.     $2000, CERT Helmets & Vests – Motion to allocate up to $2000 in community project funds (Category:  Public Safety) to purchase CERT helmets and vests for graduates of future CERT classes held within ASNC boundaries (B2 & B7).  The LAFD no longer has the funds to purchase these items, which previously were handed out to all CERT graduates.  As a result the class in Hermon, which is starting Mar 15th, will not receive gear if this funding request is not approved.  CERT's entire identify is defined by these safety clothes – therefore it's very important that other organizations pick up this missing piece of CERT funding.  The LAFD will continue to pay for the majority of the costs (ie. conducting CERT classes free of charge), as well as help ASNC secure a bulk discount of vests and helmets through their distributor, SOS Survival Products.  [Request Originator: Mark Legassie, Public Safety Cmte Chair]

New CERT Level 1 certification program being offered on Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm, starting March 15  (Hermon Community Church Fellowship Center, 5800 Monterey Rd, LA 90042).

B.    Northeast LA CERT drill scheduled for March 2011 ( Tom Wirth, Batt 7 CERT Coordinator).

C.    Next Public Safety Meeting (TBD).

D.       Adjournment.

* The ASNC Public Safety Committee is open to all Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council stakeholders
