Voters in Los Angeles City Council District 1--which stretches from Mount Washington in to the north to Adams-Normandie in the south--were truly blue in Tuesday's Presidential election, supporting Democratic candidates across the board and voting of favor of propositions that would repeal the death penalty, raise taxes for education and increase regulation of genetically modified foods.
Residents from CD1--which also comprises Highland Park and parts of Echo Park--strongly supported a second term for President Barack Obama, casting 29,437 votes in his favor compared to 4,450 for challenger Mitt Romney.
In the race for the 51st Assembly District, local results matched those of the county. Jimmy Gomez won 12,931 votes compared to 8,484 for Luis Lopez--almost a mirror image of those across the entire assembly district.
Though they often agreed with statewide election results, CD 1 voters didn't get everything they wanted on Tuesday's election.
Though Proposition 34, which would have overturned the death penalty, failed statewide, it was supported by a nearly two-to-one majority in CD 1.
Similarly, California voters were against the passage of Proposition 37, which would have required genetically modified foods to be labelled as such. Voters in CD1, however, strongly supported the proposition, giving it 20,129 yes votes compared to 12,709 no votes.
Local Measure J, which would have extended a half-cent transportation sales tax for 30-years, fells just short of the two-thirds majority it needed for passage in the county. It would have passed with flying colors in CD1, though, earning 24,139 yes votes compared to 7,157 no votes.
