2 Highland Park Pot Shops Survive Prop. D Closures

Two Highland Park medical marijuana dispensaries are among 135 weed shops in Los Angeles that city authorities will permit to remain open in the wake of voter-approved Proposition D in elections this past May.

Of the two Highland Park pot shops, only one—HPPC Collective—is still in business at the address given on the city’s list of 135 stores.

Located at 5716 Figueroa St., HPPC Collective has been open since 2006, a security personnel at the store told Highland Park-Mount Washington Patch Monday.

The other pot shop on the city’s list is The Green Goddess Collective, which was located on 5713 Figueroa St., across the street from HPPC Collective, until about a year ago. The city's list features an alternative address for Green Goddess: 1663 Waterloo St., in the 90026 zip code encompassing Silver Lake.

According to the store owner who currently occupies the former location of Green Goddess Collective, the pot shop moved to York Boulevard under a new name—The Humming Bird.

Located at 5013-A York Blvd., The Humming Bird was closed Monday, and a peek inside from the front door revealed a store that looked run down. A few stores east, on 5045 York Blvd., was another weed shop, Green Earth Collective, which is not on the list of 135 surviving pot shops in L.A.

Proposition D calls for a drastic reduction in the number of medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles and allows no more than 135 dispensaries that registered with the city before the City Council passed an ordinance in November 2007.

A spokesperson for the city attorney's office told KPCC that to make the list of 135, those businesses also had to be registered with the city in 2011 and under Measure M, which began taxing the sale of marijuana.

Proposition D could potentially close down up to 1,000 marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles, the Daily News reported.
