Woman Arrested After Driving Stolen Vehicle Past Police

Officers were looking for the suspect in a car theft, when they saw the reported stolen vehicle drive past them.

A woman in her 30s is hospitalized as of Wednesday morning after crashing what police say was a stolen vehicle into a garage in Highland Park.

The Los Angeles Police Department says it happened around Church Street and Marie Avenue as officers were following the car on Tuesday evening.

According to Sergeant Lisa Phillips of LAPD Northeast, the incident began while officers were investigating a report of a stolen pair of car keys from the bathroom of the Citibank location at 5053 York Boulevard.

"A customer at the Citibank on Avenue 51 and York stole some keys to a car she found in the bathroom, and then came back later and took the car," Phillips said.

The keys were reported stolen at around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Phillips said.

Later that evening, while officers were investigating at the woman's suspected location nearby, they saw what was believed to be the stolen car drive past them.

"They started following the car, which drove up Church Street. The driver crashed into a house and then a parked car," Phillips said. "The driver attempted to get out and run, but I guess she was a little injured. She was take to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries."

Phillips was unable to provide the exact time of the crash.

Once the woman is released, she will be booked on suspicion of grand theft auto, according to police.
