Update: Tuesday Night’s Underground Explosion Centered at Luther Burbank School

Power to the school is restored but calls to the main office remain unanswered.

An underground explosion that occurred Tuesday night in an electrical vault was centered at Luther Burbank Middle School and caused power outages in a number of residences for about an hour.

Power to the school, however, wasn’t restored until Wednesday morning, Albert Rodriguez, a public affairs specialist at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power told Patch.

The explosion occurred at 7:07 p.m. and power to nearby residences was restored by 8:07 after electricity was rerouted from another vault, Rodriguez said.

The phone line at Luther Burbank appeared to be down or constantly busy for much of Wednesday morning when Patch called. The school’s phone was working in the afternoon but nobody answered calls.
