Suspect Charged in Morales Killing

Daniel F. Aguilar is being held without bail.

Daniel F. Aguilar, 19, was on Wednesday morning charged in Los Angeles Superior Court for allegedly killing Pedro Morales and wounding of his brother on Saturday evening in Highland Park.

"The investigation has pretty much winded down since Aguilar was identified," said LAPD Northeast Homicide Detective Jose Carillo. "All of the evidence we've found along the way led to him being charged. "

Carillo also confirmed that the weapon used in shooting was a shotgun. Police also believe the shooting to be gang related.

Aguilar was ordered to be held without bail at Los Angeles County prison facility. His next court date has not been scheduled yet, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

, Morales and his brother were both shot at around 6:20 p.m. in front of an apartment building on 5300 Monte Vista St. on Saturday, July 7. The Coroner's office did not release the name of Morales' brother, who suffered non-life threatening wounds from a shotgun blast to the shoulder.

Anyone know this scumbag?
Hank Hill July 12, 2012 at 07:45 PM
Good news. Now, where does he live and can they evict his family?
HLP Frenchy July 12, 2012 at 08:12 PM
19 years old and a lost life...Can we blame the parents?
Charles Inman July 12, 2012 at 08:59 PM
Blame Rent Control.
Armez July 12, 2012 at 09:02 PM
Glad to hear of it! Can the family of a suspect be evicted? They should once convicted. It's not a law... A landlord should have the right to evict any NAMED tenant on the rental contract who's been convicted of a crime. Contracts should require naming all person intended to live in a given rental. But I'm not an attorney. Are the parent's responsible....I think that half the time they are responsible, especially if the involved are from multi-genterational gang affiliated families with passive parents or monolingual, undereducated, under-resourced families with passive or scared families, unwilling to put in the effort to prevent gang participation. So sad.

I can't wait to hear more about this kid and how his family and society failed him. How he didn't have a father and his mom was an addict and the only real family he has is his gang. Oh wait, maybe he is just an asshole with a gun who now deserves to spend the rest of his miserable life in a really shitty prison, good riddance.

Great news. Hope they caught the right guy and it sticks.

I think the owner of the huge pink aparment building needs to be questioned. Not doing a good job screening his tenants. That building on 53 and Monte Vista has always had problems. I grew up on Monte Vista and 30 years ago that building was just as bad as it is today. If it was up to me I'd have it demolished.
Nimby pimp July 13, 2012 at 04:58 AM
@ flygirl. I agree. Who is the slumlord? Lets post his/her name and home address.
US Marine July 13, 2012 at 08:41 AM
@flygirl. You're right. I heard some police departments have a community policing team who help neighborhoods and problem areas deal with landlords and apartment managers who allow this type of criminal activity. I hope LAPD Northeast Division has a detail like that. Sorry for any type-os or/and if I offended anyone.

District Attorney Carmen Trutanich's office does not actively enforce the nuisance abatement laws that help remedy crime infested housing such as the Avenue 53 / Monte Vista apartment building. I would like to know from Ed Reyes and his staff, "How long must a community wait for a right to live in a peaceful community?" And, "What steps are being taken to ensure that all HP residents live in a safe, gang-free community?" One consideration should be the landlord pay for staffing an uniformed police officer on the corner of Avenue 53 and Monte Vista.

Has anyone stopoed to think that all three are at fault. Maybe the brothers and suspect are all from the gang and maybe the suspect commited a minor infraction and so maybe the brothers were sent to teach the suspect a lesson and maybe the suspect decided to become the the teacher now because of some stupid gang laws 2 families have lost their loved ones and their lives are forever changed. I can almost guarantee you that the surving brother will in 5 years be either dead himself or in prison because gang members are the worst students
North_EastLA July 13, 2012 at 03:31 PM
All three individuals involved are members of the Cypress Park Gang. This gang's turf is no where near where the shooting occured. The pink apartments on 53 didin't have anything to do with the incident. Daniel did not live in the pink apartments, but did live on monte vista. The pink apartments on 53 are a stronghold for the dogtown gang, which have been in a heated turf war with the HLP gang. This is the reason for the violence fueling monte vista. Until police crack down on both local gangs the killings will continue. Highland park would be a beautifull community if it wasn't for the gang problems that HLP has had for years.

This started when LA started Rent Control in 1978 as revenge for passing Prop 13. LA County started rent control and then repealed it. The sky didn't fall.
Armez July 13, 2012 at 06:46 PM
NEW YORK CITY demolished gang infested, high rise housing projects some years ago because of gang related illegal activity that had gone on for years. I would be for demolition of any gang infested, two to eight story apartment buildings in Monte Vista or nearby areas. Such areas need to be re-zoned to single family dwelling status to prevent build-up of gang member sponsoring families. Just a thought.

The pink apartments have been infested with crime since I was ten and I am now 40. Not only are they an eyesore, but seem to draw in criminals. Lots of bad energy around there. Too many units in one building is never a good thing. Code enforcement needs to be notified to get involved with this situation in order to make a change at the core.

Where is the heart in all you cold hearted people none of you have the right to judge this young man... First of all you have no right to say such foul words about his family this has nothing to do with his family you don't know what if adopt was the case or he just never had parents honestly I will pray for you and everyone that has something bad to say about this just because all of you think your life is so good maybe because your wealthy and have no problems in life there's people out there suffering and you shall never look down on someone unless your picking them up!! So let me just say this young man here lost his mom when he was about 3 yrs old to a gang member how can he not grow up knowing this gang life when clearly he lost his mom to one at a young age... and i'm sure if I lost my mom at a young age like that i'd live a life like this too with out a mom so please just stop with these hurtful comments leave it in gods hands to judge not yours thank you!!

The scumbag had his mother killed in front of him when he was 5. The scumbag had no father. The scumbag will get life in prison for what he did. People like you have no idea what goes on in this neighborhood. Keep your prejudice comments to yourself.

Blame the Catholic Church! According to CDC.gov, half of all pregnancies in the US every year are unintended! (http://www.cdc.gov/NCHS/data/series/sr_23/sr23_029.pdf page 9)

Pedro was NOT affiliated with any gangs, so if you don't know nothing, don't disrespect& say ignorant comments. & I can't feel bad for the suspect, he took an innocent life,

The suspect lost him mom to a gang member killing her??? &you 9erforlife &may expect us to feel pitty for him, when instead of changing as a better person, he did the SAME EXACT THING as his mother's killer did, he killed a FATHER OF 4 ,an innocent man who had absolutely nothing to do with this. And Pedro was NOT under no circumstances a "gang member " he was a great, caring, loving person who's families life's will forever be different! So watch what you say because you are wrong &don't know anything about Pedro. Rest in peace Peter! You'll always be in my prayers!

The majority of the tentents in the so-called Pink Apts., are not criminals, or in gangs. They are hard working people of color. The teens who live there are typical of any in the city. A friend and I were talking about this corner, & we both agree that it's been relatively quiet for at least the last 10 years. You don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water, do you? Don't stigmatize an entire apartment building because of a few bad apples...or because a family is struggling under conditions of poverty, and the discrimination of so-called "nieghbors."
