Police Release Name of Suspect Arrested in Israel Cervantes Shooting

The suspect has been identified by police as 24-year-old Omar Gutierrez.

Police have released the name of the suspect who was last week arrested for the Sept. 17 killing of 26-year-old Israel Cervantes near the Highland Park Goldline Station on Marmion Way.

The suspect is 24-year-old Omar Gutierrez, who was arrested on Tuesday Sept. 18 by LAPD Northeast officers and charged with homicide the following day in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to LAPD Homicide Unit Detective M. Miyakawa. 

According to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, Gutierrez is being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Chinatown. His bail is set at $1 million.

Gutierrez is next due in court on Oct. 1.

According to police reports, Cervantes was fatally wounded near the Highland Park Gold Line station on Marmion Way at around 2 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 17.

Police do not believe that the shooting was gang-related.
