Fire Destroys Unit in Benner Street Building

Residents were unable to return to the complex as of Wednesday morning.

Nobody was injured injured in a fire that burned through an apartment building on 5931 E. Benner St. on Tuesday evening

According to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey, firefighters were called to the two-story fourplex at around 7:34 p.m.

It took 32 firefighters approximately 26 minutes to knock down the blaze, Humphrey said.

On Wednesday morning, a pile of insulation that had been ripped from the inside of the building stood in the rear parking lot of the complex. The ground was still covered in fire fighting foam.

Property manager Jose Villafuerte said the entire building had been evacuated because of the fire, though the a rear unit had sustained the most damage. Residents were still unable to return to the building as it had been deemed unsafe.

He said he did not know what the caused the fire.

"We're still waiting for the fire department's report," he said.
