Added Patrols Lead to Quiet Weekend in Highland Park

Detective Juan Aguilar said no major crimes were reported on Saturday or Sunday.

"It was a really quiet weekend," said LAPD Northeast Gang Unit Detective Juan Aguilar.

After two weeks of almost daily shootings, added patrol units from LAPD's Central Bureau were deployed throughout Highland Park this past weekend.

Aguilar said he noticed an immediate impact.

According to Aguilar, no gang related arrests were made over the weekend, but the presence of added officers seemed to stem the recent stream of violence.

"Absolutely, they made a big impact. Just their presence alone helped to calm things down," he said.

A total of 12 shootings have been reported since July 6 in Highland Park, according to crimemapping.com,  one of which resulted in the death of . Daniel F. Aguilar, 19, for the murder of Morales and non-fatal wounding of his brother.

On Thursday, July 19, on North Figueroa Street.

Aguilar said police are hopeful they will be able to make an arrest in the recreation center shooting.

"We have some good leads," Aguilar said. "We have some suspects--we're looking for some persons of interest."
