According to the Los Angeles Times, the lower second mattress of the trundle bed, which would typically be stored beneath the main bed, had been pulled out and raised and apparently fell onto the child.

Police told The Times that there was no indication of foul play, and the girl's parents were interviewed, but were not arrested.
