Poll: Should Unions Lose Paycheck Deductions for Political Spending?

Proposition 32 on November ballot seeks to reduce labor movement power, critics argue.

Whether a union represents you or not, your vote will help decide a November ballot measure that is keeping labor leaders up at night.

Proposition 32, according to its advocates, “stops special interests from taking political deductions from employee paychecks to guarantee every dollar given for politics is strictly voluntary.”

Critics say: “This measure says it prohibits unions from using payroll-deducted funds for political purposes. It says it also applies to corporations, so it sounds balanced. But 99 percent of California corporations don’t use payroll deductions for political giving; they would still be allowed to use their profits to influence elections.”

Which argument influences you?

Get all money from unions and corporations out of politics. Too many electeds have been coerced by the money to make bad decisions based on their own self serving agenda.

I agree. But prop 32 is not the prop that does this. It removes union money while allowing huge corporate interest. We need huge bi partisan public opinion to remove money from politics, and lobbyists have to be part of that conversation. Prop 32 is a ruse. Please vote NO on prop 32.

Here is what is misleading about prop 32. Current law allows only VOLUNTARY payroll deductions to go for poitical causes. It is currently illegal to automatically deduct funds for political reasons from the paychecks of union members. Following the lead of Wisconsin, it 32 passes, expect to see collective bargaining on next year's ballot. Unions have raised the standard of living and working for most middle class Americans.

The reason you join a Union is to protect your job and rights. 32 is designed to limit the rights of Union members to stand up to rich powerful corporations and individuals. We are drifting further and further apart between the halves and the have nots and shrinking our middle class. Silencing our Police, Firemen, Nurses and Teachers is bad for Democracy and bad for the country, Please vote no on 32
