Ms. Atkinson will discuss her art practice, Getting Your Sh*t Together, an artist run business working to make life better for artists by providing information and resources that enable an artist to create a career on their own terms.  She has published an artist manual and created software to keep track of just about everything in your art life.  She will do a demo of the software as a way of introducing the audience to all the things you need to keep track of to have a professional artist career as well as answer any questions from the audience on the business of being an artist.  

Ms. Atkinson's art practice ranges from creating objects to installation, social practice, public art projects, exhibitions, curatorial, nonprofits and artist run businesses.  Her current art project is Getting Your Sh*t Together/GYS*T Ink, the goal of which is to help make life better for artists by providing information and resources on careers for artists.  She is also the founder of Side Street Projects, a nonprofit artist-run organization in Los Angeles which exhibits the work of artists internationally.

Karen has exhibited and curated throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Cuba, Japan and South Africa and was included in the Fifth Havana Biennial in Cuba.  She has curated numbers gallery and traveling exhibitions and public projects, including the For the Time Being parking meter project:  http://karenatkinsonstudio.org/?page_id=97, and Projections: intermission images--slides projected in commercial theaters between films.  For over twenty-years, she has been teaching at CalArts as well as in the City of Los Angeles and around the country.
