Patch Blog: Pushing Forward With Obama

Sept. 23's Pushing Forward With Obama event will feature Gil Garcetti, musician Jim Kweskin and a host of local musicians.

Gil Garcetti, who remarkably transitioned from 32 years of public service as a prosecutor--eight as L.A.’s District Attorney--to a second career as a distinguished artist-photographer, author and philanthropist, will be among
the speakers at the September 23 “Pushing Forward With Obama” gala fundraiser in Mt Washington.

An eloquent speaker on behalf of progressive causes, Gil Garcetti is also a leading proponent of the Prop. 34 “SAFE California” proposal to eliminate the death penalty in California in favor of life sentences without the possibility of parole. As an author, his books include "Water Is Key: A Better Future for Africa," co-written with Peter H. Gleick, Jimmy Carter and Kofi Annan.

Other speakers for the event will include State Assemblyman Anthony Portantino and Los Angeles City Councilmembers Ed Reyes and Jose Huizar.

Entertainment for the event will be provided by the legendary folk performer Jim Kweskin, whose recordings for Vanguard and Warner Brothers helped introduce “Americana” music to a broad audience over the past five decades. Speaking on NPR’s “Fresh Air, rock historian Ed Ward called Jim Kweskin’s group “among the most important bands of the early 60’s,” placing him alongside the Rolling Stones the Beatles and the Byrds. During that decade, Jim Kweskin’s band shared concert stages with Janis Joplin, the Doors, Linda Ronstadt, Joan Baez and Bob
Dylan.

On Sept. 23, he’ll be joined by Northeast L.A. musicians Juli Crockett, Lisa Dee, Michael Feldman, David Jackson and Padrick Pepe.

"Pushing Forward With Obama" will take place at 1109 Oneonta Drive in Mount Washington, from 2-5 p. Telephone number at the location is 323-344-9955.

The event will include a silent auction of pieces from an art collection curated by noted Los Angeles-based artist DeeDee Cheriel. An additional auction of unique collectibles will also be featured. Food, soft drinks, beer and wine will be served.

“Pushing Forward With Obama” is hosted by an ad hoc group of Northeast L.A. progressives, labor representatives and concerned neighbors. The group includes Jose Gardea, Cynthia Ruiz, Liaison Transportation, Anne and Paul Ahrens, Jeff Boxer, Doug Dawson and Tony Scudellari, Gwen Freeman and Andy Jardini, Pat Griffith and Scott Burleigh, Sharon Kyle and Dick Price and Connie and Keith Rohman, Jain and Eliot Sekuler.

Suggested donation for the event is $100. Checks should be made payable to Obama For America. All proceeds will benefit the Obama campaign.

A parking shuttle van, provided by Liaison Transportation, will escort guests to available street parking.

RSVPs for the event may be emailed to NortheastLAObamaEvent@yahoo.com
