York Boulevard Parklet Puts 'The Park in Parking'

An article in the latest issue of Westways pays homage to one of L.A.'s "pint-size pioneers of the coming minipark wave."

Just in time for Councilmember José Huizar’s announcement Saturday about a timeline for York Park, an article in the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Westways magazine pays tribute to a parklet on 5030 York Blvd.

Dedicated Feb. 2, 2013 and sponsored by Huizar, NELAart Inc., The Glass Studio and Shared Spaces, the parklet is among five “pint-size pioneers of the coming minipark wave,” according to the article, titled “Putting the Park in Parking,” and published in the June issue of Westways.

“Parklets provide an opportunity to create open space at little to no cost to the city,” the article quotes Madeline Brozen, program manager for UCLA’s Complete Streets Initiative, as saying. “They provide spaces for people to sit and enjoy themselves, they foster social cohesion, and Southern California has the perfect weather for them.”

A plaque on the York Boulevard parklet claims it's L.A. first to be installed.
