Poll: Should the Hermosillo Club Sign Stay or Go?

Should she stay or should she go?

Ross Stephenson----has already indicated that he'll be making some changes at the neighborhood bar.

Expect locally brewed craft beers, a slightly more inviting atmosphere and perhaps a new window to allow light into the dark barroom.

He's yet to decide, though, whether he'll be removing the Hermosillo Club's iconic neon sign, which features a blond haired woman in a form-fitting green dress.

At a meeting of the land use committee meeting on Tuesday, Stephenson said he was hoping to keep the sign, but hadn't made any final decisions.

Patch readers are split, as well.

"Ditch the lady in the green dress! It's gross!" said Patch commenter Megan W.

Added reader Mark: "They need to get rid of that sign. It's tacky."

However, not everybody is so down on the lady in green.

"I know it's not PC but I love the sign," said Patch columnist Kim Axelrod Ohanneson.

Reader Maryam Hosseinzadeh agreed.

What do you think?

If They Decide Too Take It Down Let Me Have The Sign I Can Put In My Yard"

The interior always made me feel like I was in the video for Love Is a Battlefield! Keep the sign and that dark dirty interior; it also motivated me to learn more Spanish!

PS Dave I also love the caption that reads..This is not a scientific poll. :)

don't take that sign down! It's my driving cue that tells me I'm in the best part of town!

The new tenant/owner should do what they want, but I think the old sign could be integrated into a new sign and remain as part of the neighborhood.

Agreed, the new tenant/owner should do what they want. I'd take it down, create a new brand and I'd put the old sign up inside as "art."

I like nostalgia and old signage generally looks way better then new signs but this sign sends a message that is very particular and in my mind not very positive. It's not about being PC but it is a message and that message should be intentional. It would be cool to see if there are other clues to the past (like what it looked like as the Hi-Hat) before he decides what to do-- Like Little Cave which has under covered a pretty great looking facade. Maybe there is another direction that would be better.

My wife thought that this was a strip club This place is trying to be like verdugo bar. Verdugo bar doesn't even have any outlandish signs other than a small signage that says 'cocktails'. Take the sign down . As hot as Esparenza is, people will think that this place is a strip club before they would ever think it's a "high end" wine bar. lol. I thought the goal was to attract new clientele. I can't picture the regulars of the original hermosillo who favored cheap crappy beer would ever make a higher end wine bar their new watering hole.

A window in the front will make it obvious that this is NOT a house of ill repute. Keep the sign!
Punky April 07, 2012 at 04:46 AM
The sign should probably go, even though it is pretty 80's great. Just don't put TV's (yes, that's televisions) in the bar. Why do all bars feel they need to put TV's in their establishments? People ARE capable of having conversations without the pull & draw of the idiot box, especially at a wine bar. Plenty of other places have televisions, be unique and don't put one in!
Susan R April 07, 2012 at 03:00 PM
Punky they put in the televisions for the same reason that supermakets and restaurants now all have piped in music. They think people are idiots. And, with that happening there is less and less communication between people. Communication is a skill that is being lost when there is piped in music and television everywhere.
Susan R April 07, 2012 at 03:01 PM
People need to tell supermakets and restaurants to either turn down the music or TURN IT OFF!!!
Amy April 26, 2012 at 12:15 AM
It's hideous. Take it down. At least if you ever want women to go in there. I figured it was a strip club first time I saw it.

Can't anyone see that's a bathing suit not a dress, duh!
Gma September 19, 2012 at 01:03 AM
