AB 711 Gets the Lead Out

This year my house in northeast LA will be 100 years old.  Many of the homes on our street and in our community are older like mine.  And because of that, before my daughter was born, 5 years ago, we took pains to make sure that our home was safe from any old paint that might contain lead.

We’ve known about lead’s health risks for many years.  It’s been removed it from paint, gas, toys and many other products.  But, now, most of the lead remaining in our environment comes from spent lead ammunition, which poses a threat to all of us.

In addition, lead ammunition still threatens the Golden Eagle, the California Condor and other endangered species.  We should be protecting these majestic animals for generations to come.  Children, like mine, who are growing up in urban Los Angeles, deserve the opportunity live in a California where these majestic animals thrive.

For our children’s sake, it’s critically important that my representative, Senator Kevin de Leόn, supports AB 711, a bill to require non-lead ammunition in hunting.  AB 711 protects public health, while also saving some of California’s most endangered wildlife.
