A Haunting in Mount Angelus (Photo Gallery)

Louisa Van Leer's historical haunt of Mount Angelus' secret stairs brought the ghosts of Highland Park's past back to life.

There was a haunting in Mount Angelus on Sunday, as the hilltop neighborhood's were brought to life for one evening.

The tour, organized by Mount Angeleus resident Louisa Van Leer, opened five of the neighborhood's nine stair streets, which had been closed to the public since 1987.

As tour-goers walked along the stairs, they were regaled by actors portraying historical figures who played a key role in both the development of Mount Angelus and the women's suffrage and temperance movements.

Van Leer explained that Cora Pond-Pope was responsible for developing Mount Angelus in the early 20th century, and was also a key organizer in the suffrage and temperance movements. As a result, many of Mount Angelus' streets are named after Pond-Pope's friends and colleague who also contributed to the movements.

Garrison Drive, for example, is named for William Lloyd Garrison, who was the publisher of the The Liberator, a weekly abolitionist newspaper. Livermore Drive takes its name from Mary A. Livermore, who founded The Agitator, a journal of the women's suffrage movement.

The tour offered more than just historical ghosts, though. Kids received Halloween treats and played at an arts and crafts table, while adults were treated to a performance by local indie pop-rocker Timothy Sellers, of Artichoke.
