Library Selects 'Unbroken' for 2013 One Book One City Program

The nonfiction World War II airman's story is a New York Times bestseller.

The Sierra Madre Public Library has selected Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken for next year's One Book One City citywide reading program.

The book, which spent time at the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list and was named by Time magazine as the best nonfiction book of the year, tells the story of an airman's survival, resillience and redemption.

His odyssey begins on a May afternoon in 1943, when an Army Air Force bomber crashes into the Pacific Ocean, leaving only a slick of oil and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of the young lieutenant, who was pulling himself aboard a life raft.

In conjunction with the book reading, a month-long series of free events focusing on WWII and open to the public, is being planned for February 2013.

Copies of the book to check out are available at the Sierra Madre Public Library, located at 440 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.

Hillenbrand is the award-winning author of the 2001 book Seasbiscuit: An American Legend, which was made into a 2003 Academy Award-nominated film.

2013 will mark the ninth year the people of Sierra Madre have held a One Book One City event.
